Walking Berlin / Fantastic Norway

By Amber P — Filed under: Housing , , ,

Our friends from Fantastic Norway shared with us their project, “Walking Berlin”, an event created as part of their exhibition at the DMY International Design Festival 09 in Germany.

The walking houses are man-sized models of their latest architectural project: a tourist destination located on the northern west coast of Norway. As the project depends on the idea of travelling, they decided it was only fair that the houses got to do some travelling too!

The project consists of a group of narrow high-rise modules welcoming the guests of the Norwegian west coast. The systematic and flexible module-system allows the outdoor spaces, the miniature high-rise modules and the interiors to be designed in collaboration with the future inhabitants and selected artists.

More images after the break.

Interesting how these people decided to promote their design using a typical method employed by obnoxious ad agencies to promote bubble gum and power drinks.

Who in Berlin really cares what some hipsters designed for the coast of Norway anyways? Its obnoxious and annoying and I’m quite sure the people sitting in the tram found it annoying as well.

Mr. Cheap says:

Theese guys are more known as a brand than they are know as architects. What they design is ordinary, but their process and approach is not. Or at least, it used to be non-ordinary. Now I think they are less proactive, and more like consultants.

One could critizise them for doing a project like theese vacation homes, that are indeed low-friction in the norwegian coastal landscape, but on the other hand, so little is built there that is not ordinary. This is something new, and if it’s built, it’s progress. That is an attitude that is pherhaps more important than doing amazing projects that are not well recieved. It’s important that architects actually want to build their projects, and I think that is the case with theese guys.

Joninberlin, I saw you also wrote the same comments about this on Dezeen. You really have a problem with this project don’t you. Why so bitter? Are people not allowed to have any fun in the design world? maybe they just want to mess about have have a laugh.
