Missile base at the top of the Devínska Kobyla National Nature Reserve in Bratislava

The missile base located above the city of Bratislava on the top of Devínska Kobyla is today an unused and dilapidated memory of history. Concrete silos, bunkers and barracks built in the 1980s attract only a few contemporary witnesses, curious people and passing tourists. The buildings are in poor technical condition and, in many cases, movement in their vicinity is dangerous. In such locality which oozes history and is also surrounded by beautiful countryside, we see the potential for its improvement.

Student Design Competition: Call for Entries

Our world has shifted. Just over a year ago, campuses across the U.S. shuttered in response to a pandemic that disproportionately impacted vulnerable pockets of our population: the elderly, the disabled, those with compromised immune systems, and underserved racial and ethnic minority groups. With the pandemic as the backdrop, the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and others focused another spotlight on the racial profiling and police brutality that has pervaded society in the United States. It has jarred us awake to systemic inequities and highlighted disparities within our communities. College students were, and still are, at the forefront of a wave of people demanding justice and lasting change.

INDESEM Design Competition (Pre-Event): A Public Digital Space At Home

A PUBLIC DIGITAL SPACE AT HOME
The basic principles of a home are shelter and a safe environment for its user. Whether it is raining, storming or sunny outside, your home is where you retreat to. Home has always played this role for humankind since the agricultural era. However, through changes in history, the home has changed as well. A home has evolved from a public place during the Archaic period to a private space during the Industrial period, when every family had their own home. Now in the 21st century, or the data age, the concept of a home has changed again.

MiG Prize 2021 - Call for Submission

THIS YEAR’S CHALLENGE
The Covid-19 pandemic is far from being over; nevertheless, architects and designers are already beginning to envision its effects on how buildings are designed and inhabited. The pandemic – particularly its lethal transmissibility that is exacerbated by human proximity – exposed the fragility of the spatial arrangements and technologies that organize our everyday life, be it in the home, the workplace, educational institutions, or shared cultural and civic activities. The accelerated integration of remote modes of communication due to social distancing challenges the very need for designating buildings to host productive and collective activities, and undermines the economy that relies on revenues generated from these activities. Moreover, the airborne transmission of the virus is compelling architecture to address issues, such as building environmental systems, that it has traditionally delegated to technical advisers and experts.
