The Association of Architects of Uruguay has announced the selected works from the 129 projects that participated in the 2021 Completed Work Competition. To ensure maximum territorial equity, the competition considered projects built between 2014 and 2020 across different regions of Uruguay. Divided into seven diverse categories—ranging from housing, cultural, and social infrastructure to interventions in built heritage or public spaces—one award and two honorable mentions were granted for each category.

The jury comprised Alma Varela, Humberto Eliash, Bernardo Martín, Héctor Berio, María Samaniego, Fernando Giordano, Alejandro Baptista, Nivaldo Andrade, and Angela Perdomo, who evaluated their respective categories. They were advised by Juan A. Articardi, Cristina Bausero, and Salvador Schelotto. Below are the winners in each category.

Valladolid is a town of just under 50,000 inhabitants, located in eastern Yucatán. It sits halfway between Cancún and Mérida, about 40 minutes from the Chichén-Itzá archaeological zone. Initially, the tourists who visited did so as a stopover during their travels across the peninsula. However, its gastronomy and architecture transformed it from an involuntary rest stop into a tourist destination in its own right.

The phenomenon of building new cities around the world is gaining momentum in an effort to mitigate the effects of climate change, contain mass migration and brain drain, or improve the poor quality of life in some cities—a reality highlighted by pandemic lockdowns, among many other reasons. Urban planners and professionals in architecture, engineering, and other disciplines undoubtedly face major challenges, raising the question: should we concentrate all our efforts on creating new urban centers, or focus instead on improving conditions and addressing the issues of existing ones?

The Municipality of General Pueyrredón and the Buenos Aires Province Association of Architects announced a Provincial Ideas and Preliminary Projects Competition for the 40th Anniversary Memorial of the fallen soldiers in the Malvinas and its area of influence. This scope included the plaza of the same name and its surrounding area in the city of Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires province.

The Alejandro de la Sota Foundation has created a portal to showcase the leading figures and works of the pioneers of Spanish modern architecture. The reason? When discussing the Modern Movement, it often seems that only architects like Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, or Walter Gropius are mentioned. But what was happening in Spain during those years? Which figures stood out, and what were their intentions when designing?

Under the title Origen, Estudio Normal and Fundación IDA are organizing an exhibition centered on the BKF chair, presenting it as a fundamental piece of Argentine design history and a key element of the design language of the BKF+H project, developed by Estudio Normal. With contributions from Fundación IDA, the exhibition is enriched by previously unpublished archival documentation related to the history of the chair and its creators.

The Museo ICO in Madrid presents “Anna Heringer. Essential Beauty.” From February 9 to May 8, it will host the first monographic exhibition dedicated to the German architect in Spain. Curated by Luis Fernández-Galiano, the show is organized by the Fundación ICO.

To mitigate the consequences of informal urban growth in the Lima and Callao regions, on April 19, the Colegio de Arquitectos de Perú Regional Lima (CAP RL) launched the program “Valora Nuestro Barrio” (Value Our Neighborhood). Through 21 selected projects, the initiative aims to improve residents' quality of life by recognizing and showcasing successful urban improvement practices in the proposed neighborhoods.

Over the years, interior design has evolved in response to changing needs, and above all, to the experiences it seeks to evoke for the user. Over the last two years, we have witnessed a radical shift and a heightened interest in this field, as the pandemic forced us to pay closer attention to how we configure the spaces we inhabit. This has brought about much more holistic designs aimed at user well-being, combining colors, sensory experiences, technology, and natural elements that promote health.

The Catalan firm Batlleiroig, founded in 1981 by Enric Batlle and Joan Roig, has designed the first residence for the British group Vita Student in Barcelona. With this project, Batlleiroig joins an innovative proposal that aligns with the firm's other works, where the primary focus is urban renaturalization, landscape regeneration, and the creation of healthy spaces. The firm promotes an innovative design seeking a new way of living for students and faculty, featuring increased contact with nature, a strong focus on sports areas, and large common spaces for the entire community.

The contemporary urban footprint seems to expand its boundaries virtually without restriction while increasing in complexity. Major cities like Barcelona have expanded to the point where political boundaries merely represent the lines of administrative jurisdiction—which, in satellite imagery or everyday experience, often virtually cease to exist or are barely recognizable. On the other hand, a contemporary reading of its Metropolitan Area, stretched between mountain ranges, rivers, and the sea, demonstrates that this progressive expansion has always been shaped by its unique geographical enclave.

From April 11 to June 30, the Young Architects Festival (YAF), developed by Constructo, is taking place at the Ruinas de Huanchaca Park and Museum in Antofagasta, Chile. Within this space, Siglo 22 Arquitectos has created an immersive architectural installation activated by a series of events, including international lectures and a free public exhibition.

As part of the cultural programming for Mexico City's Art Week, PEANA presents the exhibition Por debajo del árbol at Agustín Hernández's Architecture Studio, which opens its doors to the public for the very first time. The show brings together contemporary works by fifteen artists in dialogue with Agustín Hernández's creative universe. Curated by Ana Pérez Escoto and Carlota Pérez-Jofre, the exhibition will run from February 10 to March 4.

The Municipality of the City of Mendoza launched a provincial ideas competition for the design and construction of a memorial honoring Malvinas veterans. Although organized by the Architects' Association of the Province of Mendoza (CAMZA), the initiative originated from a group of Malvinas veterans who reached out to the municipality. They sought a single space where they could be remembered, and which could bring together the four local Malvinas organizations: ACUVEMA (Cuyo Association of Malvinas Veterans), AVUM (Association of Veterans United for Malvinas), ADEM (Association of Malvinas Veterans), and FECUVEMA (Cuyo Federation of Malvinas Veterans).

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, better known as Le Corbusier, is one of the leading figures and great masters of the Modern Movement. Directed by Gerardo Panero, the feature-length documentary “Plan for Buenos Aires” explores the architect's attempts to shape the layout of the city of Buenos Aires with his ideas.

On Thursday, April 7, the Regional Museum of Aysén (MRA) won the LCD Berlin Award 2021/22 for “best new museum” globally in the Latin American category. The accolade was presented by the international organization “Leading Culture Destinations,” which is headquartered in the German capital, in cooperation with VisitBerlin.

The award, which recognizes the museum located in the city of Coyhaique as one of the world's emerging and established cultural destinations, is a recognition of the work carried out by the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage through Chile's National Cultural Heritage Service.

Between October 2021 and February 2022, the Mies Memorial Library Architecture Student Competition was held. With 430 students from around the world participating, 105 projects were submitted to envision a building on the IIT campus in south Chicago that could preserve the history and celebrate the life, work, and legacy of one of the fathers of modern architecture, Mies van der Rohe.

Lluís Comerón Graupera passed away on Tuesday, January 25, at the age of 61, as announced by the Superior Council of the Colleges of Architects of Spain (CSCAE), where he had served as president since early 2018.

A week ago, we announced the 15 finalist projects of the 2022 Building of the Year award —the prize for the best architecture in Spanish. Our jury of experts—you, our readers—made an initial selection of 15 from nearly 1,000 architectural works built in Latin America and Spain to proceed with the final vote for 3 projects that represent the best of the architecture that inspires, defines, and shapes us.

We are pleased to present three projects located in Colombia, Cuba, and Chile that demonstrate the relevance of thinking of architecture as a solution to specific and local needs in order to improve the quality of life, at any scale or program.
