Northcrest Developments has officially launched a global design competition for The Runway at YZD in Toronto. Formerly home to the historic Downsview airport, YZD is among the most ambitious and significant city-building efforts in North America. The Runway at YZD Design Competition will task cross-disciplinary design teams with transforming the historic 2-km (1.3-mile) airstrip into the cornerstone of the future series of mixed-use communities across the expansive 370-acre site.
Good design evinces a sensitivity to its users and their needs, often reimagining the user experiences of a given space to promote beauty and delight; nowhere is this sensitivity more essential than in designing for the youngest and most impressionable members of our societies. From birth and infancy through to adolescence and even early adulthood, the spaces we — by choice or not — place our children in or subject our youth to inherently structure their formative experiences of the world. We can come to think of design as an act of care, and consider how design and its related processes can form part of the responsibility of care we have towards the younger generation, whether intentionally or inadvertently designing for children.

The city of Kharkiv stands as Ukraine's second-largest city and has been considerably affected by the ongoing conflict due to its proximity to the border with Russia. During the first conversation between the Kharkiv Mayor and Norman Foster in the United Nations' Second Forum of Mayors, the Mayor underscored the importance of creating a new landmark for the city. This ideas competition seeks to inspire local and international experts to propose design solutions for an iconic building in Kharkiv—the Regional Administration Building—as well as for the public realm of the adjacent Freedom Square. The proposals should offer a holistic intervention that envisions a prosperous future while enhancing the historical significance and identity of Kharkiv. This competition is part of the larger Kharkiv concept Masterplan project: a local and international initiative of the Kharkiv City Council, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) within the framework of the UN4UkrainianCities initiative, the Norman Foster Foundation and Arup among others.

Qatar Museums will open a first-of-its-kind exhibition exploring the arts and architecture from Pakistan since the 1940s. Organized by the future Art Mill Museum and presented in collaboration with the National Museum of Qatar, "MANZAR: Art and Architecture from Pakistan 1940s to Today" presents the enormously diverse output of the painters, photographers, architects and others who have defined the array of narratives, histories, and contemporary perspectives of Pakistan’s cultures over the past eighty years. The artworks, programs and events extend from the gallery spaces to the courtyard of the Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani for a broad immersion in Pakistani art and architecture. The ground-breaking exhibition, designed by renowned architect Raza Ali Dada and unfolding across twelve sections, will reveal how artists responded to and reimagined international modernist movements.
