The AIA Flint 2022 Design Competition focuses on the existing City of Flint Municipal Center Campus located in the heart of Downtown Flint on Saginaw Street between Fifth Street and the I-69 & I-475 interchange. The 23-acre campus is split between seven government office buildings on the North side of Stevens Street, with a gas station, pawn shop, and vacant office building on the South side of the street.

The intention of the Kurula Varkey Design Forum has been to curate discussions centered around the thoughts of students and young graduates. It has constantly tried to bring the agency which students hold, to forefront; to provide a platform for students to display their opinions to the profession they’ll be entering soon. Writing becomes a tool to examine one’s own thoughts; at the same time it provides an important platform to express one’s voice to a larger community. Eager to provide a podium for contemplation and expression in the field of architecture, we’re pleased to announce ‘KVDF Writing Competition 2022’, for students of architecture, planning, design, and other associated fields to put down their ideas and opinions through persuasive, inspiring, and influential writing.
As spatial practitioners, we are often presented with uncomfortable relationships, forcing us to choose sides and make decisions. We are constantly challenged to rethink how we embrace the dynamics between architecture, and external forces.
It may not be your first instinct when entering a building to consider how it makes you feel, but architecture has always had a big impact on emotions. Different spaces are designed to make its inhabitants feel different things; offices can make you feel energised and productive, art galleries can make you feel thoughtful and curious, and museums can make you feel calm and intrigued. Each of these spaces are completely different from each other and are far more than just a building.

30 Crossing is the largest and most expensive project that the Arkansas Department of Transportation has ever undertaken. The idea of the contest is to work on objects that create tension in spaces, generating future projections that bring new visions and strategies to implement a place through an open and dynamic process. The object in question is a “catalyst”, that intervenes with its strength in an urban space and changes it. In this scenario in which the city is protagonist, what generate interaction? The reflection focuses on Architecture, its function, transience and the relationship with the outside. It may disappear one day, but the void left around it is only apparent since what it creates remains over time. An object symbol that somehow establishes a new spatial, social and cultural dimension. Questioning the urban space means meditating around the “emptiness” of the city, understood as a “place” of social events, forms, meanings, in which its own identity is reflected. Spaces live through change.

On September 29 and 30, 1941, more than 33,000 Jewish men, women, and children were murdered in Babyn Yar, a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kiev. This event constituted one of the largest single massacres perpetrated by German troops against Jews during World War II. Over the following two years, Germans killed upwards of 70,000 more people. Upon evacuating the city in 1943, the bodies were exhumed and burned. Babyn Yar is the international symbol of what is known today as the “Holocaust by Bullets.”
