Edouard François, a former student of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées, created his own architecture, town planning, and design agency in 1998. His work was immediately recognised, through operations such as The Building that Grows (Montpellier, 2000), Flower Tower (Paris, 2004) and Fouquet’s Barrière Hotel (Paris, 2006). His work on sustainable architecture led The Financial Times to dub him “The Hero of Green Architecture” in 2011.
Can food form a better city - and vice versa? Prague's CAMP (Centre for Architecture and Metropolitan Planning) will search for the answers to this question during its FoodCAMP programme from December 2 to 6. Every evening of the week will explore a different layer of food - urban planning dynamics covering topics like the sustainable relationship between the city and countryside, urban gardening, restaurant design and street food. The programme includes movie screenings, talks, debates with foreign speakers like Carolyn Steel, author of Hungry City, a kids’ workshop and a talk show.
Internationally recognized and celebrated artists, designers, engineers, and researchers in cooperation with top universities from all over the world are invited to participate in a contest and exhibition of innovative lightweight structures. The structures must display a strong vision of structural design and innovation. They should demonstrably be the result of structural engineering focused research projects. It is our ambition to have an exhibition that shows new insights on structural typologies, through the design of a pavilion. The pavilions will be exhibited during the joint IASS - Spatial Structures 2020 symposium in Surrey UK. What power does it have in cultivating the built environment and defining its boundaries?
ACA has been organizing the International Design Competition annually since 2013 to establish connections among the global architectural student community and academia, to create reference points much beyond its immediate context and have a meaningful and progressively enriching dialogue on architecture by breaking regional and contextual boundaries that we create for ourselves. In its 6th year, the competition has grown to be reckoned among the best events for Architecture students to test their learning, skills and showcase their capabilities. These days becoming an entrepreneur is a popular idea, yet what does it mean to “be an entrepreneur?” Do you have to be the founder of a startup? Work for a special unit inside a company? Go to work for a unicorn? In other words, what does it really take to become an entrepreneur?
In our present moment, the incessant production of culture and knowledge imparts an important task to the notion of commitment. Knowledge and culture are produced in excess in institutions and popular culture, making it the impossible task of critics and scholars to sift through endless amounts of cultural material and make value judgements. Partly a consequence and a cause of a shift in thinking that began in the 1960s and 1970s, a phenomenon that could be called a democratization of production (of narratives, images, cultures) has had some positive effects for the civil rights movements, leading to the inclusion of underrepresented demographics into fields that were previously hostile to them. However, the consequences of the Postmodern debunking of universal truth (that was necessary for and produced by such a shift in thinking) has carried with it the accompanying erosion of the concept of morality. The last decade has seen a further dismantling of the universal notion of “truth” and its effects in politics—note the great difficulty for contemporary politicians to convincingly assert that something is morally correct and necessary. The statement that “truth is subjective,” once a great tool to undermine the dominant grand narratives of the past, is now freely used in the name of individual freedoms, often without assessing the morality of such freedoms.
Concéntrico, the Logroño (Spain) International Architecture and Design Festival, seeks to reflect on the urban environment and the city through different formats of architectural and design projects. Next year’s edition, Concéntrico 06, will take place from April 29 to May 3, 2020.
