From March 12 to 21, 2020, architects from across the country may register for the national public competition, which will select two preliminary architectural, urban, and landscape design proposals for the Parque da Cidade in Belém. The Uyuni Salt Flat Shelter competition seeks to foster a reconnection with nature and with the human experience within solitude. Acceleration, instantaneity, immediacy, technologization... Daily human life has been subsumed by synchronous devices such as the clock and the mobile phone, resulting in a stressed society that has lost all trace of its biological temporality and its shared life with the environment. Here, on the salt flat, all technology disappears. Total computerization is not possible.
Natural disasters, flooding, unbalanced environmental exploitation, urban occupation of high-risk areas, exclusionary urban planning, the degradation of historical and cultural heritage, precarious housing, restrictive urban mobility, and government neglect are some of the many adversities that define the context of contemporary cities. The city emerges as a grave consequence of these disastrous events, which occur either through continuous processes or isolated episodes.

The Rio de Janeiro Department of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-RJ) has opened registration for the 58th Annual Awards—Road to the Centenary and the 37th Architect of Tomorrow Award. The former aims to recognize the intellectual and professional production of the Department's members, while the Architect of Tomorrow is dedicated to honoring academic work produced in architecture and urbanism programs across the state of Rio de Janeiro. The winning final graduation projects in the eight categories of the Architect of Tomorrow award will also compete for the Grandjean de Montigny Award, sponsored by CAU/RJ.
