More about this product

Mitrex is a specialist in high-performance building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems that combine solar generation and façade aesthetics.

At St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada, the eFacade PRO system was chosen to retrofit the Loyola Residence, transforming its aging exterior into an energy-active building envelope. The project exemplifies how academic institutions can modernize existing infrastructure sustainably while maintaining aesthetic integrity.

St Mary's University Loyola Residence

The Loyola Residence, a 70-year-old student housing tower, required a deep retrofit to replace failing cladding and improve performance without disrupting campus life. Working with project consultants, St. Mary’s University selected Mitrex eFacade PRO as a ventilated rainscreen system for the building’s south-facing façade. Covering approximately 6,554 ft², the panels feature a custom seafoam green finish designed to complement the campus architecture. Installed entirely from the exterior, the retrofit allowed students to remain in residence throughout construction. With an installed capacity of 90.2 kW, the façade generates roughly 73,300 kWh of clean electricity each year—reducing operational costs and advancing the university’s sustainability goals.

Mitrex eFacade PRO offers a durable, weatherproof solution that merges renewable energy production with visual appeal. The system enhances thermal performance and extends the building’s lifespan, all while requiring minimal maintenance compared to traditional cladding. Its solar glass design adds a contemporary finish, proving that BIPV façades can achieve both environmental and architectural objectives. Backed by a lifetime warranty guaranteeing at least 80% energy output after 25 years, the installation secures long-term value and performance for the university’s campus.
