Classic Tile Roof for Camping Site in Alfacs | Tejas Borja

Tejas Borja is a worldwide leader in the production and distribution of ceramic roof tiles. Sourcing clay from Mediterranean quarries for over five decades, their products combine tradition, research, and leading design for seamless integration into contemporary projects with cutting-edge technology.

This tiny but significant intervention at the Alfacs Camping site on the coast of Alcanar, in Tarragona, is part of an intermittent series of renovations that the site experiences every year, during the slowest camping season, winter. Over a space of years, the gradual transformation of small architectural strategies and infrastructural interventions has slowly contributed to what is only an open-ended process of renovation.

The gradual transformation of the site has consisted of:

• The creation of artificial topography by new and old stepped terraces, walls, paths, and platforms for Mediterranean gardens and leisure uses,
• Terraces for appropriation of lightweight architectures -textile tents, pergolas, wooden bungalows
• Topographical supports in concrete and stone
• Rammed-earth outdoor pavilions

The intervention by Bajet Giramé and JAAS consists of a central building and bungalows are composed of two new central buildings that shape a pathway towards the sea, in continuity with a sinuous descending street. Rather than objectual buildings, these preeminent edifices appear as ambiguous built ensembles where the same wall-architecture is crowned by ceramic pitch roofs, rendered volumes and chimneys, offering grand interior rooms for communal purposes and facilities.

Next to the restaurant terrace, in front of a rocky shore, the project enhances the existing traces of a former inlet, urbanised and occupied by camping plots over fifty years ago. By reclaiming this cove with sand and an embedded swimming pool against a circular retaining wall, it intends to embrace the collective desire of enjoying a small beach sheltered from the sea.
