Pilkington UK, part of the NSG Group, manufactures float, coated, laminated and processed glass for architectural and technical applications. Pilkington AviSafe™, Pilkington Suncool™ and Pilkington Optilam™ glass from Pilkington UK were used in the Solina Observation Tower and Gondola Station, a tourism facility in Solina, Poland.
The Project
The observation tower and gondola station were developed by PKL (Polish Cableways) and PFR Group (the Polish Development Fund) to strengthen tourism around Lake Solina, the largest artificial lake in Poland, in the Bieszczady Mountains. The site lies on a route used by more than 130 bird species, including eagles and hawks. The buildings use extensive glazing to open panoramic views over the lake and mountains, so the glass had to address both the visitor experience and the protection of local wildlife.

The Products in Use
Pilkington AviSafe™ was specified to reduce bird collisions. Its UV-reflective coating forms a pattern that birds perceive as an obstacle, while for visitors the glazing remains transparent. Pilkington Suncool™ 70/35 controls solar heat gain and glare in the glazed spaces, and Pilkington Optilam™ laminated glass provides safety and acoustic performance in the tower and gondola station.
