A special screening of The Spirit in Architecture: John Lautner
Presented by the Society of Architectural Historians/Southern California Chapter The film journeys into Lautner’s world with footage from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin, extensive documentation of his extraordinary buildings, interviews with historians, critics, collaborators, and clients, and engaging footage of Lautner himself. Following the screening, SCI-Arc hosts a panel discussion with award-winning filmmaker Bette Jane Cohen; architect and film co-writer Tom Marble; co-producer Evelyn Wendell; author, historian, and architect Alan Hess; and Lautner scholar Jon Yoder.
Kay e Sante nan Ayiti (Creole for Housing and Health in Haiti), is an international competition launched by the ARCHIVE Institute to build five housing units in the area of St. Marc, Haiti. The housing units are unique in that throughout the entire project, from design, construction, and habitation, HEALTH is a driving factor.
We are asking you to contribute your ideas to this project, whatever your background, to share your knowledge and create a truly interdisciplinary network of interested individuals. The 5 winning proposals will be built in 2011, with habitation commencing July 2011. The winning designs will also be showcased in travelling exhibits to universities worldwide and in a ‘best practice’ design development compendium.
Antonio Pedro Coutinho shared with us the entry he designed with Estelle Dugachard, Fabiana Araújo, Nanda Eskes, Ricardo Caruana for the competition regarding the expansion of the Environment Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The main challenge dealt in this competition was finding a way where the architecture would be inserted on the ecosystem where it was being planned; the magnificent Botanical Garden of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Orhidelia Wellness / Enota Main goal while designing the building was to diminish as much as possible its presence in the surroundings. Since the demanded program of wellness center is very extensive and in parts it demands overcoming great spans and big heights of inner spaces, putting up classically conceived building on central green plot would fill up last remaining open area in thermal complex and largely degraded its spatial quality (read more…)
MVRDV presents the design for the Pushed Slab office building at ZAC Gare de Rungis in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, France. The 19.000 m2 building will be one of the first low energy buildings realised in France; with low energy consumption and an energy production of appr. 200.000kWh per year. Construction of the 35 million Euro building commissioned by French project developer ICADE Promotion is expected to start 2011.
Measuring 145 metres from top to bottom and counting 38 floors, Dexia Tower is the third highest building in Brussels, Belgium. In the middle of the Rogier Square the building shines like a beacon over the town. The Tower is visible from several major traffic arteries in the capital and is situated precisely in the middle of the Mint Square – North Station axis.
ADFF’s programming will offer a diverse selection of films including feature-length, documentary and shorts that explore how architects and designers think, work and create. The films profile visionary architects and designers, explore urban, social and environmental issues as well as the creative design process and product development.
To help translate these ideas into reality, three Award grants totaling €125,000 are on the line. One overall winning idea from any of the three categories outlined below will receive a grant of €75,000, while the two additional ideas will receive grants of €25,000.
Traveltime is an international summer workshop that will take place in the island of Imvros/Gökçeada between 7-15 August. The intensive 9-day design workshop is open to all architecture students who are interested in relationships between theory and practice. Participants will investigate ways of understanding a place with its history, memory, geography, nature and culture through travels, readings, and performances on the island in order to develop individual and group design work.
Stefan Krische shared with us his proposal for an information pavilion competition for the Universalmuseum Joanneum, which has it’s 200th anniversary soon. The main points said construction should be made out of wood, it shoul be transportable and it couldn’t cost more than 40.000€.

Bastard Store / studiometrico Italian practice studiometrico shared with us how they converted an old cinema in Milan, into the new Bastard flagship store, which also includes a suspended bowl and offices for Comvert. Skateboarders dreamed place to work. Founded in Milan in 1994 by four skateboarders, Comvert S.r.l. conceives, produces and distributes clothing for skateboarders and snowboarders under the brand bastard and distributes the brand Electric in Italy (read more…)

ASAE is an annual two-day seminar at the School of Architecture, Lund University. It celebrates the beginning of the academic year. The aim is to keep an annual ongoing discussion about international education programs and architectural education strategies. ASAE promotes encounters between different schools of architecture in Europe, America and other countries, taking into consideration the objectives of the School of Architecture in Lund: Architectural Design, Experiment and Construction.
