Buildner has announced the results of its Re-Form: New Life for Old Spaces, second edition, an international ideas competition examining the adaptive reuse of small-scale existing buildings. The competition invited architects and designers to propose transformations of used, abandoned, or overlooked structures with an approximate footprint of 250 square meters, located anywhere in the world. With no fixed site or program, participants were encouraged to explore alternatives to demolition and new construction through reuse strategies grounded in contemporary social and environmental concerns.
This workshop is not only a great opportunity for professionals and students from various fields interested in Technical Assistance for Social Interest Housing (ATHIS), but it is also the first in a series of workshops across several states aimed at expanding the ATHIS Network, which began in São Paulo with the "Vivência em ATHIS para Melhorias Habitacionais" course. This network seeks to promote this practice, facilitate information exchange, and provide support to those involved through the "Arquiteto de Família" (Family Architect) methodology.
This workshop is an excellent opportunity for professionals and students from various fields who have an interest in Technical Assistance for Social Interest Housing (ATHIS).
The course is structured around visits to contemporary architectural works in the city of São Paulo, always accompanied by the architect who developed the project. A public inaugural lecture will be held to present the course and explain the dynamics of the visits. The selection of works to be visited is based on the following criteria: location, scale, authorship, and use. Each visit includes discussions on topics related to the day-to-day realities of architectural practice, education, new technologies, work processes, and the project's relationship with the city.
Architecture has always been a tool for power: political institutions, economic symbols, and religious monuments. Asymmetric and dominant relationships still persist in the profession's modes of production, whether on the construction site or in the design process. What would it look like to use architecture as an instrument for decentralizing power and fighting for the right to the city through community initiatives? In general, the management model for cities, public spaces, and facilities does not allow for shared, participatory management by the population. What, then, does it mean to conceive of an architectural practice that fosters autonomy?
Seminar: Architectural Design with PPCI Requirements and Constraints. This seminar is based on questions submitted by AsBEA-RS members, which were previously forwarded to the Fire Department. Aiming to showcase contemporary Japan, whose architecture is internationally recognized, Japan House São Paulo, Arq.Futuro, and the Japanese Pavilion are hosting the debate series "Designing Cultural Institutions: Contemporary Challenges" throughout 2019, featuring renowned Brazilian and Japanese architects. The first session will take place on May 2nd at the Japanese Pavilion, featuring Vinicius Andrade and Hiroshi Sambuichi, who is visiting Brazil for the first time. Curated by Natasha Barzaghi Geenen, Cultural Director of Japan House São Paulo, the series—which consists of four sessions—will address the current challenges of designing a cultural institution, taking into account new possibilities for space usage and the various media, platforms, and dimensions of contemporary artworks. A session featuring Brazilian architect Thiago Bernardes and Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane, who will have a solo exhibition at Japan House São Paulo in the second half of the year, is already scheduled for August. The starting point for this series is how architecture responds to the daily challenges faced by cultural institutions, which have evolved into spaces where a wide variety of activities take place—from traditional exhibitions and art preservation to lectures, meetings, workshops, screenings, and performances, as well as spaces dedicated to cafés and restaurants. "These institutions play a fundamental and growing role as centers for social interaction. The versatility of these spaces must be considered from the moment the architectural project is conceived," comments Natasha, the series curator. The question, "What are the premises and challenges of designing these institutions today? And what is the architect's role in this multidisciplinary work?" guides this series, which aims to debate these issues and present proposals, thereby creating a parallel and contributing to reflection on the subject. This course aims to teach the fundamentals of Green Infrastructure, a landscape planning and design method capable of linking nature conservation with urban development. It does so by creating a network of multifunctional landscapes that provide space for human activities without compromising natural processes.
