The Society of Architectural Historians is now accepting abstracts for its 70th Annual International Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, June 7–11. Please submit an abstract no later than June 6, 2016, to one of the 32 thematic sessions, the Graduate Student Lightning Talks or the open sessions. The thematic sessions have been selected to cover topics across all time periods and architectural styles. SAH encourages submissions from architectural, landscape, and urban historians; museum curators; preservationists; independent scholars; architects; and members of SAH chapters and partner organizations.

This competition challenges designers to create an exceptional presidential library for U.S. President Obama (OPL). We look for design proposals with wide reaching architectural interventions that deal with the challenging South Side of Chicago, and make a case for a sustainable urban and economic growth. There are currently two potential site locations – one on the east side and the other on the west side of the University of Chicago (see p1.jpg): The Washington Park site and Jackson Park site. You are asked to make a choice between the two sites. There were numerous alter-native site proposals, e.g. sites in New York, Hawaii, Chicago etc. The Obama Foundation has identified these two properties as the ones with the most potential, based on key assumptions, opportunities and limitations relative to their contexts.
This event frames embodied energy—defined as the sum of energy required to produce, transport, assemble, and dispose of any building element—in the context of broader design ecosystems and architectural issues. Design Capital 21 is an interior design competition for a new integrated mall. The integrated mall intends to adopt as its conceptual design this theme: the world’s famous capital cities from the five continents. Each floor must be representative of the continent by bringing to life the characteristics and identities of its capital cities.
Collective Habitat is a competition for students and professionals which seeks to produce ideas to densify areas in or near the centers of 5 Chilean cities with collective housing. The goal is collect innovative architecture proposals that offer access to housing for middle and lower class families in well-served urban areas of Iquique, Valparaíso, Santiago, Concepción and Puerto Montt.
Only three A3 digital sheets are needed plus a 200 words summary. Proposals must be collective housing projects for middle and lower class families; they also could incorporate additional uses if the participant wants. There is no restriction in scale or materials,

With his designs for Skansen Restaurant, Ekeberg Restaurant and the Horn Building, the architect Lars Backer brought the International Style in architecture to Norway. Many people had felt that a new era was imminent, and now it had arrived.
The exhibition “Lars Backer – architect. A pioneer of Norwegian Modernism” tells the story of Lars Backer’s life, explains his contribution to Norwegian architecture, and sheds light on the era he lived in.
Students from Stuart-Hobson Middle School spent their CityVision semester researching what makes a great green space more fun. In collaboration with the NoMa Business Improvement District, they used their findings to design a park for the NoMa neighborhood. Join us to see the students' designs at the reception. A series of talks focused on the theme of ‘Building on the Built' hosted by Jonathan Tuckey Design and which the studio hopes may start an on-going conversation about the opportunities and problematics of architectural interventions within existing structures.
This 4-session class is an introduction to architectural free-hand drawing through lessons at the Center and on-site sketching exercises outdoors.
Topics will include sketching building façades, basics of perspective drawing, and techniques for showing light, shadow and rendering building materials. This class is open to the general public - no previous drawing experience necessary. (Ages 16 and up)

Dallas Architecture Forum, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing public education about architecture, design and the urban environment, will continue its 2015-2016 Panel Discussion Series on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 with “The Social Impact of Greening the City” moderated by Donald Gatzke, who served as Dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington from 2004 through 2014 and is now a Professor at the university on the faculty.
FM8 is concerned with the meaning of architecture and the city. The dinosaurs of capitalism have become the senescence of urbanism. If the modernist project of carte blanche is over, how do we engage the city’s filthy state without a clean slate?
