This lifestyle of respite also transcends into local architecture and interior design through the use of traditional techniques, natural materials, and eclectic decor. From humble beach cottages to breathtaking cliff-top perches, Life’s a Beach takes readers into remarkable coastal dwellings around the world—each one characterized by its particular location, climate, and culture. Whether it’s the Anglo-American charm of classy East Coast beach houses, offering both a sense of spaciousness and intimate hideaways for cocooning, the bright white walls and pale wood flooring of Scandinavian seaside homes, the Mediterranean approach to interiors that mixes stark reduction and a deep understanding of the materials used, South East Asia’s beach abodes that celebrate centuries-old craftsmanship, or Latin America’s ‘tropical brutalism’: the homes featured here have found new and inventive ways to interpret classic design vernaculars.
What unites and also differentiates them is a commitment to reflecting their owners’ individual personalities and lifestyles. Each is a canvas for creative expression which seeks to avoid seaside decorating cliches and aims instead to reflect and preserve meaningful stories about its local surroundings and the permanent community that lives there.

From nightclubs to villages, bookstores to community centres, the 2SLGBTQ+ community has found safety, community and belonging in numerous visible and invisible spaces. These queer spaces have been a life saving haven for many, making room for a historically marginalized community.
Venezuelan architects from different latitudes have surprisingly joined together with their allies in the world, through an educational platform that seeks to "build and not simulate reality with an eye on the peripheral globe."
The program is open to students of all levels and from anywhere on the planet, who will have the opportunity to train in local projects, exploring the peripheries as part of a fresh and challenging context where new spaces of architecture open up.
The 2021-2022 cycle will jumpstart through a Virtual Community format, which offers academic credits adaptable to different university systems: a trimester, a summer school, an internship experience, a research project, or a work of scientific accreditation for studies of postgraduate. This is followed by an experimental laboratory in Central America where students will come into contact with sensitive projects in fertile communities and territories. And finally, it will culminate in the implementation of a project built in a community of Caracas, Venezuela.
The program has the support of the Global Research Program on Inequality, different universities and institutions in Latin America and the world, and high-profile professionals experts in architecture, urban planning, anthropology, sociology, engineering, and sustainability, who will guide the processes of the network, facing complex situations immersed in the fabric of the city, and will certify the knowledge applied by Dislocal.

The missile base located above the city of Bratislava on the top of Devínska Kobyla is today an unused and dilapidated memory of history. Concrete silos, bunkers and barracks built in the 1980s attract only a few contemporary witnesses, curious people and passing tourists. The buildings are in poor technical condition and, in many cases, movement in their vicinity is dangerous. In such locality which oozes history and is also surrounded by beautiful countryside, we see the potential for its improvement.
The Lithuanian National Museum of Art (LNMA) has just announced an open international architectural competition for international open architectural project competition of the building complex of Jonušas Radvila Palace and it‘s approaches in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The competition calls for a vision for the revitalization and empowerment of the Radvila Palace building complex – museum of art and design: to create a museum of global art and design, showcasing art of different periods from different countries of the world. Visual art and design is the core concept that binds the whole complex of buildings together. It must also become an attractive public cultural space, accessible to all.
The Radvilos residency, built in 17th century, is located in Vilnius Old Town. During the centuries, the complex has experienced some alterations, but today it is one of the historic monuments of national importance in Lithuania.
Today, the buildings belong to the LNMA, but only a small part of the premises are functioning as spaces, suitable for visitors. The rest of the buildings are in a quite derelict state. The LNMA intends to wake the complex for the new life and to, creating a museum of international visual art, and to open it up to the public through various educational and cultural activities.
The competition challenges the architects to create proposals where the heritage values would be preserved, and, at the same time, contemporary additions would highlight the historic values and celebrate innovation.

The Kurula Varkey Design Forum is an international student led forum organised at CEPT University, India. Since its inception in 2000, the forum has strived to critically question the discipline of architecture and its manifestations at the given time through student projects as take-off points. We invite undergraduate student projects from over 100 architecture schools across South Asia, of which a few are selected as generators of the discourse.
