Backroads Buildings In Search Of The Vernacular

From New England to the Deep South, photographers Susan Daley and Steve Gross have captured more than 100 forgotten buildings along America's old auto routes. Isolated in full-color and black-and-white portraits, the roadside cafés, feed stores, grange halls, juke joints, and general stores are a poignant reminder of the ingenuity of local building practices and working-class culture during the years between the Civil War and the Great Depression. With their humble beauty and distinctive character, these once-useful structures infuse the American landscape with a strong sense of place. This collection of buildings preserves a sampling of our country's architecture heritage and encourages travelers to slow down and notice the details.

Vernacular Architecture – Atlas for Living Throughout the World

Traditional building methods – such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka – exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building.
Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 36 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance.

I never met a straight line I didn’t like.

This is a book about a modern architectural movement that bubbled up in a small, conservative city at the bottom of the world.

Extended deadline for the Co-Curatorship Call for Proposals of the 13th International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo

The 13th International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo extends the deadline for submitting proposals for the Co-Curatorship Call for Proposals until January 31, 2021, at 11:59 pm (São Paulo, GMT-3). Registrations are made through the event's website www.bienaldearquitetura.org.br.
The central issue of the 13th International Architecture Biennale of São Paulo, which will take place in 2022, is RECONSTRUCTION, an invitation to a wide debate, with reflections and proposals that point to social practices, spatial arrangements and the possibilities of living and transforming reality in urban and rural areas. It starts with the idea of rebuilding, recasting and renewing the relationships between social groups with their domestic spaces, between citizens and public spaces and personal and profissionais plots, which happen on the confined spaces and in the collective use ones, during the pandemic. In this edition, the event features the figure of a resident curator, Sabrina Fontenele, Director of Culture at the Brazilian Institute of Architects Department of São Paulo. Her goal is to think about the current edition and build a model for the following editions, working together with the Co-Curatorship selected by the call.
To this end, the Co-Curatorship Call proposes to unfold the concept of RECONSTRUCTION in five preliminary guiding axes: democracy, bodies, memory, information and ecology. The event must also prioritize sites of the city to connect and integrate actions: a network of public and community centers where integrated urban and environmental transformation projects are under way in dialogue with local communities (Jardim Guarani, Jardim Pantanal, Parque Pinheirinho D‘Água, Jardim Lapenna and Parque Novo Mundo) in partnership with the Pacto Pelas Cidades Justas; and cultural equipment and public spaces on the Avenida Paulista area. Places to host exhibitions, debates and activities that involve populations in the city, with the understanding that multiple manifestations must be welcomed and discussed in this event.
The proposals will be evaluated by ten names from different areas of architecture and urbanism and also of the arts: Gabriela de Matos, Sabrina Fontenele, Helena Ayoub Silva, Naine Terena, João Fernandes, Maria Estela Rocha Ramos Penha, Riva Feitoza, Pedro Rivera, Sepake Angiama and Janet Sanz.
