The College of Architects of Mexico City invited all Mexican architects to participate in the IV Mexico City Architecture Biennial 2019. The event aimed to identify the country's best architectural works, publications, research, and theses, recognizing their authors and sharing the most outstanding works to foster reflection on responsible contemporary architecture and sustainable solutions through analysis and critique. During this biennial, 106 projects and 18 publications were submitted, resulting in 1 Gold Medal, 14 Silver Medals, 2 Special Mentions, and 27 Honorable Mentions across 23 categories. The iconic ESSO building (now the CAR Building), designed by New Yorker Douglas Lathrop alongside Martínez Cárdenas, and the Pan American building (now the Teusacá building) by Colombian architect Germán Samper—both located across from Bogotá's National Park—are included in the "CAR- Universidad Libre" Partial Urban Renewal Plan, which proposes their demolition.

The Conservation and Restoration Service of the Alhambra in Granada is working on the wall of the Fuentepeña ravine, located in the sector known as ‘Cuesta del Rey Chico,’ to stabilize a section that collapsed in the early hours of Friday, February 8.

The Board of the Alhambra and Generalife announced this on its official Twitter account. According to the director of the Board, Reynaldo Fernández Manzano, the wall was built in 1915 by the architect and conservator of the Alhambra, Modesto Cendoya. The wall was constructed using poor materials that gradually deteriorated over time, and plans were already in place for its demolition and reconstruction. Following the sudden collapse, the Conservation and Protection Service will rebuild it with the original materials in a first phase before undertaking the comprehensive project.

On November 9 and 10, the seventh consecutive edition of Open House will take place in Buenos Aires. This international architecture and urbanism festival highlights works of significant architectural, cultural, and heritage value, opening them to the public to build a bridge between residents, professionals, enthusiasts, and their city. The project's first edition in Buenos Aires was held in 2013, making it the first Latin American city to host the event, which drew 300 volunteers and around 10,000 visitors. This seventh edition is expected to attract approximately 45,000 people.

In an official statement issued on May 8, 2019, the Board of Directors of Real Madrid C.F. decided to award the contract for the remodeling of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium to FCC Construcción. The long-standing debate over the future of the João Goulart Overpass—the famous Minhocão, which cuts through downtown São Paulo toward the city's West Zone—has finally come to an end. The safety app Malalai, created by architect and urban planner Priscila Gama to make cities and various modes of transportation safer for women, was the main honoree of the GOL Novos Tempos award. The award celebrates initiatives aimed at democratizing mobility.

Conceived and directed by British artist Isaac Julien, the video installation A Marvellous Entanglement portrays the life of Lina Bo Bardi and stars actresses Fernanda Torres and Fernanda Montenegro, who play the architect at two different stages of her life. The nine-screen installation opens today at the renowned Victoria Miro art gallery in London.

The Iphan Dictionary of Cultural Heritage is a collaborative work developed by the General Coordination of Documentation and Research of the Department of Articulation and Promotion of Iphan, as well as a research project of Iphan's Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage Preservation (PEP/MP). Its goal is to provide the cultural heritage preservation field with a dynamic and critical reference work that, drawing from institutional experience, highlights the fundamental practices, discourses, and concepts that characterize the history of this field in Brazil.

Yesterday, São Paulo City Hall approved the heritage listing of seven modernist works, six of which were designed by Paulo Mendes da Rocha and one by Gregori Warchavchik. In addition to these, 32 other properties were listed in the city.

The new São Paulo Cycling Plan, recently presented by Mayor Bruno Covas, outlines the implementation of 173.3 kilometers of new bike lanes and paths in the capital. The proposal, which is part of adjustments to the municipal administration's Target Plan, also includes the upgrading of 310.6 kilometers of existing lanes. 

The Children's Village project by Marcelo Rosenbaum and Aleph Zero was named one of the 25 best architectural works built in the 21st century. Located in Formoso do Araguaia, in the state of Tocantins, the project ranked 24th on the list published by the British newspaper The Guardian.

"Tijolo por Tijolo" is a web series about Sesc Pompeia, Lina Bo Bardi's masterpiece. Through very short videos, viewers can explore the history of the Pompeia neighborhood and learn more about the factory that operated on the site before Sesc opened. Additionally, the series covers the repurposing and revitalization of the area and interesting details about the project designed by the Italian-Brazilian architect. In total, there are 11 episodes with exclusive content about the "Citadel of Liberty," containing historical facts, quotes from the architect, and rare photos. The famous tube stations of Curitiba, icons of the Paranaense capital's urban development in the 1990s, will be replaced by a newer model. The goal of the City Hall and the Institute for Research and Urban Planning of Curitiba (IPPUC) is to replace twelve of these structures along the Inter 2 bus line.

Anyone walking through São Paulo is already accustomed to the colorful walls scattered across the capital. Generally, the graffiti that colors the city's streets is signed by men, and rarely by women. However, this scenario is changing in the city's outskirts. More and more women are bringing art to the streets, balancing motherhood with graffiti.

The curatorial proposal of the 12th São Paulo International Architecture Biennial, under the title Everyday (Todo Dia), aims to highlight the central role of the everyday – the most trivial dimension of reality – in 21st-century architecture and urbanism. “The discreet power of the everyday lies in its ability to translate the way we inhabit, use natural resources, and maintain space into common practices that make design relevant and a shared concern,” state the curators of this edition, Ciro Miguel, Charlotte Malterre-Barthes, and Vanessa Grossman.

Rosa Grena Kliass, the grand dame of Brazilian landscape architecture, received the IAB Golden Collar today in a ceremony held as part of the opening of the 12th São Paulo International Architecture Biennial. Kliass is the first woman to receive the honor, which since 1967 has recognized names such as Vilanova Artigas, Oscar Niemeyer, and Roberto Burle Marx.

Among the various strategies for urban design and the occupation of public spaces, complete streets are perhaps currently the most prominent. They stem from a very simple idea: making street space truly public, in the broadest sense of the word. In other words, their goal is to provide transportation options and access to as many modes of transit as possible—walking, cycling, wheelchairs, public transportation, and private cars.

Aiming to train graduate professionals from various fields of knowledge over a 24-month period to work in the field of cultural heritage preservation, the Professional Master's Program in Cultural Heritage Preservation of the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) has launched the call for applications for 10 fellowship positions. Interested applicants can apply until March 1, 2019.

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale has announced the Catalan practice Bonell+Dòriga, founded by the young architect duo Laura Bonell and Daniel López-Dòriga, as the winner of the third edition of the Début Award. The firm gained recognition for the work compiled on the platform A Series of Rooms, which presents an extensive, multidisciplinary study of domestic spaces and the archetypes of habitation.

Based on the 2010 Census, Nexo Jornal developed a series of maps of Brazil that reveal densely occupied and urbanized portions of the territory alongside others that are virtually uninhabited. For the study, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) divided the country into about 13 million squares of approximately 40,000 m² and counted the number of inhabitants in each.

The exhibition “Vkhutemas: The Future in Construction 1918-1930,” curated by Neide Jallageas and Celso Lima, opens at Sesc Rio Preto, where it runs until July 21, 2019. The anti-exhibition reconstructs around 300 projects by 75 artists and aims to explore the pedagogy of the Soviet school of art, design, and architecture as a possibility for the future. An acronym for the State Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops, Vkhutemas opened in 1928, shortly after the Soviet revolution, and was closed in 1930 by Stalin.
