Le bois dont on fait les villes

On the occasion of the publication of the book "The Wood That Makes Our Cities", François Leclercq and Paul Laigle, architects and urban planners, Michèle Leloup, journalist, Cyrille Weiner, photographer and editorial director, Jad Hussein, artistic director, Marie-Hélène Contal, director of cultural development, and Serge Gros, architect, teacher and researcher, ex-director of the CAUE in Grenoble, discuss the state of the French forest, the wood sector and its R&D.

A resilient architecture is currently emerging with new generation buildings whose structure and wood frame sequester carbon, thus fulfilling one of the conditions of the ecological transition. Present in the city since ancient times, wood is now developing in cities on a very large scale thanks to innovative technologies that facilitate the implementation of this material. Timber is re-qualifying the building trades at all levels - the sawyer, the processor, the architect and the engineer - and questioning conventional construction methods.

What are the ecological, economic, industrial and technical challenges related to the use of wood for large-scale structures and urban architecture? What is the future of the wood solution? Is the wood industry sufficiently well established in France to develop its age-old know-how and to propose solutions other than standard models? Does the reasoned management of its forests allow it to meet demand and compete with softwood imports from Northern Europe? In the paradoxical context of our territory, which is both rich in age-old know-how and undermined by an industry that has been losing momentum for the past forty years, how has the local wood industry in the Rhône Alpes region been able to find solutions for its economic development?

With Marie-Hélène Contal, Serge Gros, Jad Hussein, Paul Laigle, François Leclercq, Michèle Leloup, Cyrille Weiner.
