UCTEA Chamber of Architects of Turkey is organizing a series of online conferences called “Designing with People”. With the support of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture program, in these conferences, valuable laureates of the program will be giving lectures talking about their approach in architecture and/or urban planning, their ethical and design approach, and their ideas and development of participation processes. Moderated by Prof. Dr. Deniz İncedayı, President of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey, Prof. Dr. Jana Revedin, Founding President of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, and Marie-Helene Contal, Director of the Department of Cultural Development, Cité de l’Architecture & du Patrimoine will be giving introductory speeches about the award program which started in 2006, and continues under the patronage of UNESCO. The award program recognizes five architects who share both the principles of sustainable development and a participatory architectural approach to the needs of society, in both the northern and the southern hemispheres.
On the 16 March 2021 at 16.00 (GMT+3), Jan Gehl will be giving his lecture on “Liveable Cities for the 21st Century”. Jan Gehl is a 2015 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Laureate, founding partner of Gehl Architects and Professor emeritus at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In his lecture, he will describe why looking after people is crucial for livability, sustainability and health in the cities of the 21st century by using highlights from his book called “Cities for People”. Gehl emphasizes an interesting fact with these words: “Around 1960 the paradigms for city planning were radically changed. Modernism became dominant, focus moved from a city of Spaces to the city of Buildings surrounded by left over space.”
On the 23 March 2021 at 15.00 (GMT+3), Anne Feenstra and Marta Maccaglia will be giving their lectures. Prof. Anne Feenstra, 2012 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Laureate, in his lecture called “Architecture of Equipoise” will be talking about different collaborated design processes from Afganistan to Sri Lanka, Nepal and many other places. Feenstra will be giving examples from some of the projects that he was part of, and will be emphasizing the importance of understanding the needs of the people living in the area and collaborating with them during the construction processes. Marta Maccaglia, 2018 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Laureate, founder of NGO Semillas and Prof. at UCAL, in her lecture called “Living Processes for a Sustainable Future” will be talking about the Semillas experience with the assistance of Architect Giuliana Miglierina. As a non-profit organization that is committed to community development, working for equal rights and opportunities, its projects are developed within emerging contexts in the rural areas of the Peruvian Amazon and in human settlements in Lima. Semillas specializes in research projects, participatory workshops, and architectural projects linked to educational spaces, under a comprehensive development framework.
* Events will take place on Zoom. There will be the option of English (original language) and Turkish (translation) in the Zoom meeting. Conferences will be live, exclusively Turkish, on the Chamber of Architects YouTube Channel named “TMMOB Mimarlar Odası”.
