“The Next Architecture” Award (Episode I): Smart Tree: Future Life in a Vertical Community

Background
Subject to the issue of Great City projecting the situation of China’s mega cities, the block for this competition is given the motif of “Smart Vertical Community,” which seeks creative and smart ideas and solutions to high-rise buildings in terms of efficiency, flexibility, and diversity by echoing values of communication, public service, knowledge exchange, networks, and management.

Competition Project
The competition project is located at Jiangbei New District, Nanjing, Zhejiang Province, China, the International Healthy City Talent Apartment, which covers 22,770 square meters at a height of 100 meters, and is expected to accommodate 450 people. The competition area ranges from the ground to the height of 35.1 meters. The first 15.3 meters is considered as vertical public community, and the conceptual experiment unit for future residence starts from 15.3 meters to 35.1 meters. Themed with “Smart Tree,” it focuses on the whole system and integrated design, unit module integration, and research and development of key technologies and scientific innovation of “Vertical Intelligent Community”.

Open Call
It calls for coordinated design and enabled technology. It invites global architects, designers, research and development institutions, academies, enterprises, and innovative pioneers to present integral solutions, including:
-Integral systematic organization and integrated design
-Integration of diverse future living modules (can be set by function)
-Key technologies and scientific innovation

Requirements
Considering the competition project will be constructed and realized, the design solution must therefore be reliable and practical both in construction and technical feasibility.

The competition advocates all participants as individual or group (a joint team of design + R&D + technology) to provide innovative solutions following, but not limited to, the following 7 requirements:

1. Create abundant publicity in high-density and vertical life
2. Adapt well to changes, to the largest extent
3. Utilize the Internet of Things, with mobility and connectivity
4. Achieve environmental balance from a resource perspective
5. Achieve a low ecological footprint in open and integrated situations
6. Create a pleasant and aesthetic environment
7. Lead a practical intelligent construction technology

Timeline
Competition starts from June 1 and its deadline for proposal collection is until September 1st, 2018. It will go to two rounds of judgments and will announce final result in October 2018.
