Open Call: Arquine Launches Competition to Design the 2016 MEXTROPOLI Pavilion

Held annually since 1998, Arquine’s International Architecture Competition seeks to explore issues of importance and relevance to society, creating a space for dialogue between both national and international architects.

For the 18th edition of its international competition, Arquine has launched an open competition to design a Pavilion for MEXTRÓPOLI, an annual International Architecture and Latin American City festival. The installation will be located in Mexico City’s historic center, and should be a public space where key themes relating to the city can be discussed. The pavilion should also have a flexible design, as it ultimately will be repurposed as an information center for a part of the city that needs it.

More information about the competition after the break.

Arquine is transforming the spirit of its annual competition in order to create a buildable and recyclable project. An architectural event in itself, this edition of the contest aims to build a pavilion that can generate its own discourse. The proposal should be innovative and sustainable, and provide a space for interaction between architecture and citizenship. The MEXTROPOLI Pavilion will become a public space where discussions about fundamental issues relating to the city will take place.

Contestants must design a structure that adheres to the requirements set by the rules of the competition in terms of costs and characteristics. The MEXTROPOLI Pavilion will become a traveling device that each year will serve as the benchmark of the Architecture and City Festival.

  • To launch an international call for ideas for the development and construction of a recyclable and reusable Pavilion that fulfills the requirements established in the competition rules
  • To construct the MEXTRÓPOLI Pavilion; to make it into the space of reference for each edition of the festival, where each year it will support the festival’s themes of reflection and discussion when it comes to architecture and the city.
