The Arquitetura Bicha collective emerged during the pandemic, driven by an interest in reading materials on gender and sexuality in architecture. Its members began meeting weekly to debate and investigate the bibliography suggested by each of them. Books on queer theory, feminism, and architecture inspired the collective, which launched an Instagram profile to share their discussions.
Meetings that initially lasted an hour soon stretched to three. According to the interviewees, the discussions “ignited a spark and a desire to be together, also creating an affective network of friends.” Drawing from these readings, the collective subsequently received invitations to speak at universities and began establishing partnerships with other collectives. “We try to understand what this LGBTQIA+ presence is like in the city, in architecture, and in urbanism.”
