Young Spanish architecture triumphs at EUROPAN 14

Once again, the EUROPAN competition for urban and architectural ideas—which aims to deepen knowledge and research in the fields of habitat and urban planning—has highlighted the high caliber of Spanish architecture and its young architects. Through their hard work and dedication, these professionals deliver outstanding proposals with high levels of creativity, providing coherent and effective solutions to the contemporary challenges facing our cities.

Indeed, the jury for this latest edition of EUROPAN 14 awarded five first prizes, seven second prizes, and ten special mentions to projects by young architects under 40 submitted for the Spanish sites in this cycle: Alcoy, Barcelona, La Bazana, Madrid, Playa de Palma, and Torrelavega. A total of 165 teams submitted proposals in Spain.

Furthermore, the outstanding caliber of Spanish architects and the vitality of their architecture have also been recognized internationally. In fact, 14 Spanish teams received awards in cities across countries such as Germany, Austria, Croatia, Norway, Finland, Poland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, securing three first prizes, nine second prizes, and four special mentions.

Under the theme "Productive Cities," this 14th edition of EUROPAN addressed the challenge of creating new scenarios and close-knit urban fabrics by connecting habitat and production within a sustainable framework. This brought forth the collective challenge of renewing and transforming our cities to address residents' needs, fostering a deep reflection on urban regeneration, the compatibility of uses and economies, ecological cycles, and ultimately, the complexity of the existing city.

The award ceremony for the winners and special mentions of the Spanish sites will take place on March 22 in Cáceres, hosted by the Junta de Extremadura at the San Francisco Cultural Complex.

The exhibition of the EUROPAN 14 / Spain results will be on display at the COADE headquarters in Cáceres (General Ezponda, 9) until April 9, 2018, before traveling to Bilbao, Jaén, and Murcia. Additionally, an exhibition of all submissions for the La Bazana site will open on March 23 at the local church.
