"Inside out schools" ILS Summer School

The 6th edition of the Scientific School is starting today!

Starting on Sunday 3 September, the city of Cagliari is preparing to welcome more than 80 architecture professionals from all over the world. Students, lecturers and architects from 3 to 10 September will focus on investigating the relationship between places of learning and urban spaces as an opportunity for innovation in the contemporary urban landscape. Organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Environment and Architecture of the University of Cagliari (DICAAR) together with the Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning of the University of Sassari (DADU) and the national PRIN network ProSA - Prototypes of Schools for Living (IUAV, UNICA, Polimi, UNIVPM, Uni Campania, INDIRE), with the contribution of the Region of Sardinia, the Summer School will take place at DICAAR in the form of an intensive workshop coordinated by a group of internationally renowned lecturers including Anne Lacaton & Jean-Philippe Vassal, winners of the Pritzker Prize in 2021; João Nunes, the Portuguese landscape architect and founder of the renowned PROAP studio and professor at the most prestigious European universities; Jo Noero, the South African architect whose project The Red Location Precinct was nominated best building in the world at the 2013 Icon Awards; the Colombian Giancarlo Mazzanti, whose research on learning spaces as community places is a reference point for the world of contemporary design; and the Chilean Sebastián Irarrázaval, winner of the 1999 AOA (Architecture Offices Association) award from the Chilean Architecture Biennial as best young architect.

In recent weeks, the scientific committee, headed by Professor and Architect Massimo Faiferri of DICAAR, has identified, in collaboration with the city of Cagliari, "urban clusters" characterised by the presence of several schools that will be the object of study and reflection for the Summer School participants with a focus on the neighbouring spaces and their relationship with the city as an opportunity to redesign and strengthen the link between school and territory. The objective is to "overturn schools" (inside out schools) and provide design interpretations to allow the learning space to expand within urban spaces and thus become an educational opportunity for the entire community, not just the school community.

In parallel with the educational activities, the city will become the protagonist of a series of side events open to the public, including focus groups and three evening talks with Jo Noero, Giancarlo Mazzanti, Sebastián Irarrázaval and Belinda Tato (Spanish architect and lecturer at the prestigious Harvard University); an international conference that will be attended by several institutional figures such as the Magnifico Rettore of the University of Cagliari and the Assessore della Pubblica Istruzione, beni culturali, informazione, spettacolo e sport della Regione Sardegna Andrea Biancareddu, with the participation of the Assessore alla Scuola, Formazione e Lavoro of the Comune di Roma Claudia Pratelli, the pedagogists Beate Weyland and Paolo Calidoni and the Dutch architects Patrick Fransen and Loes Thijssen, and the two TU Wien lecturers Karin Harather and Katharina Tielsch; three exhibitions Paesaggi del Sacro (Landscapes of the Sacred) dedicated to the winning work of the important prize of Italian architecture of the Milan Triennale and MAXXI in Rome 2023 awarded to Carlo Atzeni, Maurizio Manias, Silvia Mocci, Franceschino Serra for the project of the Complesso parrocchiale e chiesa di Santa Chiara (Sini, Oristano, 2021); Paesaggi di Margine (Margine Landscapes), which will showcase the works elaborated by DICAAR students during the last academic year in the course of professors Carlo Atzeni, Massimo Faiferri and Francesco Marras on school buildings in the metropolitan area of Cagliari; Giocare con le pedagogie (Playing with pedagogies) dedicated to the work of the Colombian architect Giancarlo Mazzanti, an occasion for the launch of the recent monograph dedicated to his works and edited by Massimo Faiferri entitled El Equipo Mazzanti, la pedagogia dello spazio (The Mazzanti Equipo, the pedagogy of space) published by ListLab edizioni. (See programme sheet for details of activities).

"This year the school, working in close collaboration with the metropolitan city of Cagliari, hopes to become a reference point for local authorities and the regional administration in the implementation of school building policies," explains scientific director Massimo Faiferri. "In this sense, the recent agreement signed with the regional planning centre of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia is of considerable importance, with the aim of defining the guidelines for implementing these activities to support the authorities.
The objective in fact is to build a cluster of design thinking that can be a point of reference for the entire urban community and that can spread a new way of thinking about making architecture, in order to annul the distance between those who make it and those who live it. "The value of architecture lies not only in itself," says Giancarlo Mazzanti in this regard, "but in what it produces. We see architecture not only as a profession, but as a way of constructing thought and locating oneself in the world" a vision reinforced by Anne Lacaton & Philippe Vassal who state "Our work consists in solving constraints and problems and finding spaces that can create uses, emotions and feelings, because everyone, and not just some, have the right to live and inhabit quality spaces, inside and outside the home, spaces for individual and collective growth".
The hope of the Summer School and its collateral activities is precisely that of laying the foundations for transforming Cagliari into a city of learning, the seat of a multidisciplinary scientific pole of international importance, capable of helping professionals and all those who inhabit the city to think of the educating territory as an opportunity for sustainable development of urban communities.
