AD Interviews: Craig Konyk, kOnyk Architecture

While visiting New York, we had the chance to stop by Brooklyn-based kOnyk Architecture to speak with the firm’s principal, Craig Konyk. The architects categorize themselves as a creative architectural design studio – a characteristic that is evident in all of their work ranging from the smaller scale designs, such as their Hybrid House, to their larger scale proposals for the Museum of Polish History.

Here’s a video about Unsolicited Architecture, a collaborative workshop initiated by Studio-X Rio + NAI in Rio de Janeiro Brazil. In a 24 hour time period four teams were formed, four neighborhoods were explored (they each explored the neighborhood where the local architect’s office is located), held a brainstorming session, and then presented their ideas – zero clients, zero budget.

Video: Helsinki Design Lab Studio on Sustainability

The Studio spent a week together sketching ideas for a national strategy for carbon neutrality in the built environment, eventually developing 10 recommendations as a starting point for redesigning the problem comprehensively.

Video: UBC Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability

The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver is on track to open in the summer of 2011. CIRS aims to be the most innovative and high performance building in North America, a “living laboratory” where professors, students and partners demonstrate leading-edge research and develop sustainable design practices, products, systems and policies. The building will push the frontiers of sustainable construction materials and building techniques. It will draw much of its heat from the ground, electricity from the sun, ventilation from the wind, water from the rain–all while reducing the university’s energy use and carbon footprint.

Yesterday, FIFA announced the nations that will host the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup. Russia will be hosting the most important soccer event in the world in 2018 and Qatar will do so four years later. We’ve already featured Erick van Egeraat & Mikhail Posokhin’s VTB Arena for Russia. Video: Experiment process model

Rasmus Svingel shared with us a movie of a model he put together, part of his current work at Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark. It’s an investigation of space and program diversity through movement. The model arose from a digital model that were processed into an anolog structure.

Only in China could we find a video featuring the construction of the 15 story Ark Hotel built in 6 days. Located in Changsa this building is level 9 earthquake resistant and incorporates some sustainable practices.

In Progress: Film Theatre of Catalonia / Mateo Arquitectura

Currently under construction, the Film Theatre of Catalonia is a new building for the Cinematheque of Catalunya in the Raval, Barcelona. Mateo Arquitectura won first prize in 2004 for their design proposal and they were kind enough to share their construction photographs with us. Follow the break for more photographs and an extract of the meeting between Josep Lluís Mateo and José Luis Guerín about the Raval district in Barcelona.
