Ny Anstalt Correctional Facility Winning Proposal / Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects
Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects, in collaboration with Friis & Moltke, just won the competition to design the Ny Anstalt correctional facility in Nuuk, Greenland. The 8,000 square meter facility is the first such facility in Greenland, focusing on the contrast between beauty and roughness as a guiding theme for the project. This concept is also present in the choice of materials: concrete, wood and corten steel, which is rooted in a desire to adapt the complex to the landscape. ‘Storming Medusa’ Proposal / Anna Ulak
Architect Anna Ulak, inspired by the popular James Bond films, shared with us her ‘Storming Medusa’ proposal, the new villain’s lair in our ecologically and politically precarious present. Ulak notes how James Bond movies can be considered phantasmagorias which have allowed audiences to imagine the future of architecture. But now that the Cold war is over, how can the James Bond genre be utilized again to imagine a new kind of architecture? Anchored off the coast of Cape Farewell in Greenland, the project draws on the physiological characteristics of jellyfish in order to suggest a new relationship between the built and natural environment. Greenland Migrating / Henning Larsen Architects
We’ve already introduced you to the Danish Pavilion exhibition Possible Greenland, on display at the 2012 Venice Biennale, featuring possibilities that lay in store for Greenland in light of geographic changes caused by the increased rate of ice and snow melt. Henning Larsen Architects has now shared with us their portion of the exhibit, Greenland Migrating, a project developed in collaboration with David Garcia Studio and KITAA Architects. Curating the exhibit are Danish-Greenlandic Professor in geology Minik Rosing and Copenhagen-based NORD Architects.

Iceberg Trading Post / Alexandre Braleret
With Greenland’s glaciers turning into icebergs, this could be considered as a sustainable motive force for Greenland economy by reactivating “white gold rush”. In response to this, the Iceberg Trading Post project, by Alexandre Bralerest, proposes icebergs as mass shipping supported by a constellation of ice-recycling trading posts along the west coast of Greenland. The “21st century Iceberg Trading Post” is a central rig system that mediates local market, iceberg transportation, price setting, harvesting deck and scientific facilities. Venice Biennale 2012: Danish Pavilion presents ‘Possible Greenland’
The Danish Pavilion for the 2012 Venice Biennale will feature a collaboration between Greenlandic and Danish Architects called “Possible Greenland”. The exhibition will address the current development of the Arctic Region as Greenland undergoes a shift towards political independence and business development in the midst of dramatic climate changes. “Possible Greenland” attempts to look optimistically at the climate changes that are causing ice melts throughout Greenland. The shifting planes result in the exposure of vast mineral resources that can kickstart new industries and allow new urban cultures to emerge. The team of architects that designed “Possible Greenland” were led by internationally renowned Professor in geology at the University of Copenhagen, Minik Rosing and the young Danish architect firm NORD Architects of Copenhagen.

Mixed Use Scheme for Nuuk, Greenland / Regional Associates + 42 Architects
Regional Associates and 42 Architects have collaborated on the design of a mixed use scheme for Nuuk, Greenland. The design is part of a larger master plan designed by TNT Nuuk (GL) and Dahl&Uhre architects (NO) (D&U in collaboration with MDH architects(NO). The project is due to be exhibited in Nuuk, Greenland, opening on 5 April 2011. Images and a brief description of Regional Associates + 42 Architects work can be seen after the jump.
BIG wins competition to design Greenland’s new National Gallery
The team of BIG + TNT Nuuk + Ramboll Nuuk + Arkitekti have won the competition to design the new National Gallery of Greenland in the country’s capital Nuuk, among invited proposals totaling 6 Nordic architects. More images and complete press release after the break.
House of Families / Fantastic Norway
“House of Families” is a project for the Greenland Self Government and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq to provide housing for disadvantaged young women with children in Nuuk, Greenland. The architects, Fantastic Norway, who designed the building are part of a larger group led by Dahl & Uhre architects and TNT Nuuk architects and including MDH arkitekter, 42 architects + Regional associates, M: ARC and Arkitekti Helena Lennert in the development of Nuuk.
