The Self-Assembly Line / Skylar Tibbits

By — Filed under: Featured ,Installation , , , , ,

Courtesy of Skylar Tibbits and

Together, Skylar Tibbits and Arthur Olson presented a large-scale installation at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach, CA entitled The Self-Assembly Line – a large-scale version of a self-assembly virus module, demonstrated as an interactive and performative structure. A discrete set of modules are activated by stochastic rotation from a larger container/structure that forces the interaction between units. The unit geometry and attraction mechanisms (magnetics) ensure the units will come into contact with one another and auto-align into locally-correct configurations. Overtime, as more units come into contact, break away, and reconnect, larger, furniture scale elements emerge. Given different sets of unit geometries and attraction polarities various structures could be achieved. By changing the external conditions, the geometry of the unit, the attraction of the units and the number of units supplied, the desired global configuration can be programmed. Troldtekt Award for Students of Design and Architecture

By — Filed under: Competitions ,Featured ,

Troldtekt, the well-known Danish manufacturer of wood wool acoustic ceiling and wall tiles, is inviting students of architecture and design to submit creative and original concepts for new uses of the wood wool product. Proposals do not have to be just about acoustics but rather innovative and unusual ideas.

The Competition, to be judged by several well-known architects and others, offers a 5000 euro Award for the best concept.

The 2010 winner, an architectural student from Copenhagen, won the first Award for his novel idea of Soundbubbles – hanging coloured globes of wood wool designed to create interest and improve the acoustics of large rooms with hard surfaces, such as schools, swimming pools and commercial buildings.

The Competition has been widened to include international students because of Troldtekt’s increasing visibility throughout Europe.
Students are invited to register for the Award by 1 April with a submission deadline of 1 May 2012. For the full details, visit click here.

Video: Harpa Concert Hall / Henning Larsen Architects and Olafur Eliasson

By — Filed under: Cultural ,Featured ,Videos , , , ,

Designed by Henning Larsen Architects and Batteriid Architects, the Harpa Concert Hall was one of the finalists for Building of the Year. On the border between land and sea, the Center stands out as a large, radiant sculpture reflecting both sky and harbor space as well as the vibrant life of the city. This is all very elegantly represented in Pedro Kok‘s video which gives us more insight to the building from multiple viewpoints.
