The Turó de la Peira Sports Center in Barcelona is a notable architectural project, featuring a structural framework constructed entirely from locally sourced radiata pine wood by Egoin. Awarded the 2019 Mapei Prize for Sustainable Architecture, this facility spans a 5,500 square meter area and encompasses two floors accommodating a swimming pool and a multipurpose sports court.
The wooden framework comprises 9 laminated timber frames supported by pillars reaching 18 meters in height, joist beams spanning 25 meters, and lattice structures measuring 2.4 meters in height on the roof. Architect Anna Noguera explains that wood was selected for its superior performance in humid environments, making it an ideal choice for the pool area without the need for additional corrosion protection measures required by steel.
The technical complexity of the construction necessitated precise calculations, detail development, and on-site supervision. Egoin, as a specialized manufacturer, played a crucial role in its successful completion, ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality.
