Skidome Denmark / CEBRA

Our friends from CEBRA just shared the news of their next endeavor for designing a skidome in Randers, Denmark. Serving as more than a series of complex slopes for those to enjoy, the project will become the largest skidome in the world. When viewed in isolation, the massing’s gentle curves and minimalistic exterior treatment read as a subtle strategy to incorporate the slopes; yet, only when seen at the city scale does the project’s 1,000,000+ sqf (including a hotel, restaurant and shops) allow the viewer to understand the project’s potential urban presence.

More after the break.

The form’s three massive arches each span 700 meters and strongly mark their presence while spanning across the river Gudenåen.  The flattened terrain beneath the arches further accentuates the skidome’s highest point of 110 meters.

The skidome is intended for more than recreational visits.  While the arches’ will utilize both the exterior and interior srufaces as slopes, the middle arch is shaped like an urban playground with street sport facilities for skateboarding, and BMX.  The bottom arch has a green landscape roof providing the flexibility for a wide range of leisure activities.
