The design for the 2014 World Cup Final Stage Stadium by Fernandes Arquitetos Associados will provide a feeling of continuity as if the Maracanã, which is the original conception of the Journalist Mario Filho stadium, has scarcely changed. Once inside the main public areas, the old and the new will work together to create a modern yet familiar look and feel. The pinnacle of which occurs upon reaching the stands, revealing an entirely new stadium carved out of the original. The facade will be preserved, ensuring that, from the outside, the Maracanã appears almost untouched. The roof is one of the main new elements introduced, but will not bring any visual impact as it will not be visible from the outside. More images and architects’ description after the break.

The first three structural axes are being preserved, as well as, the main internal circulations and their relation to the existing structure, such as pillars, ceilings, openings etc.. On the other hand, all the structure related to services such as bars and toilets will be entirely new and finished to the highest spec.

New structures are being designed for the stands to deliver ideal conditions of visibility, safety and comfort. Parts of the north and south stands will be maintained, as well as their distinctive elliptical design. The grandstands on both sides will be brought in13 meters closer to the playing field to greatly improve the viewing conditions and atmosphere for fans and players alike.

New areas are being created such as, lounges, cabins and other sectors that could be used for all types of events. The new areas for athletes, game officials, delegates, dressing rooms, etc., were designed to accommodate, with greater comfort and efficiency, the requirements for all sports, concerts, etc.
