The winning proposal for the design of a stadium for Russia’s 2018 World Cup was created by the design institute “Mosproject-4″ from Russia and HKS Architects from the United States. The main characteristics of the stadium include an innovative constructive decision, increased comfort for both the audience and athletes, and sustainability strategies. More images and architects’ description after the break.

Based on use of the symbolism of color of a sunflower (a typical and traditional flower in Krasnodar region) and using some elements of development of the famous Russian engineer V. G. Shukhov (1853-1939), the offered constructive scheme unites the bearing system of the facade, which is underlined and articulated, and the stadium roof covering.

The offered system of mobile lattices – jalousie (venetian blind) allows to organize the through airing of a bowl of stadium during the hot summer period. As well, the system makes it possible to isolate the audience from a cold wind during the winter period. The system of a covering of the roof screen shades the zones of tribunes and opens the football field of direct insolation due to alternation of its transparent and opaque fragments.

The project provided optimization of construction and stadium operation expenses due to: standardization and typification of staircases and sanitary blocks, reduction of expenses on heating and conditioning of rooms (thanks to increase of power efficiency of the enclosure of the facade, uses of thermal waters and installation of solar batteries). A separate component of the project is the possibility of multipurpose use of stadium by carrying out concerts, exhibitions, etc. Ecological compatibility of the project is reached due to a complex of actions in the adjacent territory, efficiency of use of water resources, energy and the atmosphere of a building, materials and resource base, quality of the internal air, new strategy in the project and innovations. The sum of balls on a scale of LEED will make not less than 55 points.

Complex safety of the stadium is reached due to combination of obligatory requirements of the Russian standards and the international practice of operation of stadiums. An essential position is stability of the system of bearing designs of the roof screen to external influences. Democratic character of the functional structure of stadium is reached due to optimization of the number of skyboxes and the granting of equal conditions of comfort to all main groups of visitors, except for the governmental skyboxes and the VIP zones. The access to any circle and to any sector of stadium for disabled people and persons with limited possibilities is possible.
