Representing the future development of Venice, the LINK Solar Power Skyscraper aims to provide the geographic area of the laguna of Venice with a new landmark: a link between architecture and urbanism, between the ancient city of Venice and the industrial area named Marghera. A link between function and emotion. Designed by LED Architecture Studio, the project is an architecture-infrastructure, a crucial urban development responding to the present and future needs of this locality. Defining the skyline of the area through a formal purity, LinkSPS works in the urban scale, representing the connection between the preexisting urban elements and providing the means for their future. It defines a new extended city whilst providing new volumetric resources to house new concepts of social living, based on fluid connections and mixed-use environments.

LinkSPS is a total system: it creates new spaces for the future of the geographical area, whilst also redesigning and redefining the ancient city of Venice and Marghera. At the same time, the system aims at enhancing the productive activities of the area and at revitalizing the areas of degradation within the industrial zone of Marghera, one of the most polluted areas of Italy.

The entire design responds to the requirement for addressing energy-producing and energy-saving technologies. The industrial site of Marghera is transformed into green and sun-tracking mirrors parks. The heliostats reflect the incident sunlight onto the top of the tower, the receiver of the system, for enhancing its energy production. The remainder spaces of the tower is dedicated to the new administrative center of Venice and Veneto Region. Also the foundation of LinkSPS have an important function: it works as a geothermal energy provider. LinkSPS is provided with an external breathing skin containing the structure and the vertical connections through the parts. Finally we can say that the exposure, the aspect and the natural ventilation studies were taken into consideration. These project elements will have a crucial impact on the ecosystem and on the economy of the new urban area: it will be energetically self-sufficient and will not produce CO2 emissions.

The volumes housed in the linear new architecture are characterized by l.e.d. screen facades. This technology allows a high level of individual identification of the parts constituting the system. It can be used, for instance, to recreate the Gran Canal spatial definition through the representation of ancient Venetian archetypes, defining a link with the preexisting city.

The project is based on the reorganization of the existing roads and railways. Electric stations will provide the energy for the public transport system, whilst the use of the private transport is defined by electrical car sharing approaches. The project is also based on the creation of three focal stations: Marghera Station, LinkStation and a new Central Venice Station. Above the transport infrastructure level LinkSPS is provided with a social infrastructure: an architectural promenade characterized by green areas, public squares and facilities.

The project laguna level was designed to assist and to enhance the productive maritime activities. Specific areas were designed to develop the aquaculture that has always contributed to sustaining the insular communities of the area. LinkSPS is not to be considered as a new door to the ancient city of Venice. It is an urban fluid system. LinkSPS enables the new area to be connected internally and to also connect itself to the other European cities. LinkSPS expands the limits of Venice.
