Chongqing New World Shopping Center is located at the intersection of the Jialing and Yangtze River and just opposite the old CBD area in Chongqing. Despite the considerable incline of 40m, the shopping paradise is spread across 4 terraced levels, encapsulated in a protective glass mold to keep out the pollution and dirt of the city, fully use natural resources available such as wind, light, water and landscape, creating a comfortable shopping atmosphere and providing a multi-function leisure and entertainment space.

The shops are connected to a strip of luxury residential housing as well as a super highrise tower, serving luxury guests with its 5-star hotel. The super highrise will become the landmark of Chongqing new CBD area. The planning and architectural design was well devised based on the business model, upon completion, New World Shopping Center will become the 13th largest leisure, entertainment and shopping center in the world.

All the emphasis is on luxury yet the majority of chinese are relatively poor. It would be great to see a little more focus on social sustainability and using architecture as a means to improve the lives of millions rather than provide a flashy design for the rich elite.

It would also be great to see how they plan to combat the solar heat gain through those glass domes. Seems like it would just be a greenhouse in there. The summers in that area are HOT.

This project needs to be reworked with sustainability in mind.

Architecture is an essential tool kit to embellish our surrounding but at the same time it can end up in a fiasco. I have to say that Chongqing New World Shopping Center stoke didn´t make a very good first impression at me. The exterior is extraordinary innovative but I cannot help myself feeling like being on Mars. The interior feels much better. What I really appreciate is the use of natural resources available such as wind, light, water. Could you describe more in details how are they planned to be used?
