Yesterday, FIFA announced the nations that will host the 2018 and 2022 . Russia will be hosting the most important soccer event in the world in 2018 and will do so four years later. We’ve already featured Erick van Egeraat & Mikhail Posokhin’s VTB Arena for Russia. Now, we want to share with you this video showing five stadiums for Qatar 2022. Enjoy it!

Emilios Koutsoftides says:

Very nice video, very nice concepts etc.. But what I would like to know how is Qatar resolving the heat issue?

Well said, but it would be interesting to see what Qatar has proposed.

    Greg says:

Recently read this: “All of the stadiums will harness the power of the suns rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadiums will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadiums will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadiums’ carbon-neutrality. “

salf says:

I wonder about some issues as well, temperature, cultural/political, laws (forget women in bikini tops or topless with body paint in Qatar), a sure spike in slavery working conditions for construction workers, and the LEED joke that will surely back up building giant HVACs and westernized glassy construction in the middle of the dessert.

But however, it’s worth pointing out that the US bid was pretty “lame”

Imagine going to the Miss Universe, and the Miss that you represents you is covered in zits, with scars, a huge belly, borrowed clothing from the 80s, can’t walk in high heels, and is missing a tooth.

When someone goes to a job interview, who has more chances? a clean shaven, well dressed person, or an unshaven guy in shorts that needs a bath?

All the stadiums from the US bid are old (already constructed) only 2 of them(phoenix and dallas) are new, and they will be 14 or 16 years old by 2022, that’s not totally a problem at all, what’s worst is that none of those stadiums had even planned renovations for the world cup! (fifa.com has all the reports) and none of them is even a soccer stadium, they’re all Baseball or Football primarily.

How can the US expects to win with such a lame bid?

I heard they will be air conditioning the stadiums, pumping cool air down onto the spectator seating and the playing field. This sounds like the most unsustainable World Cup possible. Not only will they have to build a bunch of new stadiums from scratch in a country that will have little use for them when the Cup ends, but they will need massive climate control systems that will burn energy. It is appaling that not a single design mentioned Solar Panels or wind generators. This is the perfect climate for renewable energy being located in a desert along the coast!

If you have some sustainable designs for stadiums or any other project type, you should submit them to the Holcim Awards: http://on.fb.me/holcim-awards

Elchoto says:

What a waste of steel. Those stadiums will be gobbled up by the desert after the world cup ends. It is a shame that we’re having a world cup in a place where there shouldn’t even be cities. They should give back the whole area to the camels and go home.

The fact that a wealthy, self-sustaining city emerged from the desert is in itself a feat.

Richie says:

While I think it’s ludicrous and somewhat depressing that Qatar have been picked to host the tournament (money talks) I’m looking forward to seeing how the major technical challenges are to be overcome. The rendered stadium proposals are impressive enough but it all comes down to whether their cooling system actually works, even at 30 degrees it becomes uncomfortably warm to play football and Qatar has temperatures of 45-50 degrees in summertime. They’ll have to also build an entire infrastructure to transport fans to and from games, hotels to accomodate 400,000 visitors etc. God knows what a tiny country of 1.6 million people is going to do with all of this stuff once the tournament finishes.

Nombre says:

Franz Beckenbauer the vice president of the German Football Association noticed the world cup could be organized in the winter months of quatar (20 – 25°C). This could solve the biggest heat issues.

Nevertheless i’m also interested in how you transport 30.000 fans with boats. England would have been the better choice.

I do trust all of the concepts you’ve offered for your post. They’re really convincing and can definitely work. Nonetheless, the posts are too brief for newbies. May you please lengthen them a little from next time? Thank you for the post.
