OTF 3D Printing: Scholarship - IaaC

IAAC is glad to announce to you that the OTF:3D Printing Architecture program has extended the application deadline until April 19th for 2 FULL scholarships for the next academic year. This is a great opportunity to learn about novel technologies for sustainable design and construction, thanks to additive manufacturing.

With the scholarship program, we want to strengthen relations with local Universities or Research Centers in interesting contexts such as Moçambic, Zimbabue, Angola, Etiopia, Tanzania, Somalia, Angola, Camerun, Nigeria, Somalia, Kenya and many more. It's a long term project, that wants to establish long and strong relations between the two parts.

About the FULL Scholarships program

Africa is rising. It is home to the world’s fastest-growing cities, and host one of the most dynamic and young generations of entrepreneurs and designers set to become the new game changers of the construction industry. Project Colette together with IAAC wishes to support this new generation and help them propose a new sustainable architecture and urbanism capable to face the challenges of our century.

For 2020, two full scholarships are available for two African students to take part in the OTF-3D Printing Architecture program (equivalent to 9.500€ each). This allows young talents who might not have the resources to take part in an educational program abroad to learn new technologies and design strategies. These strategies can then be applied in the local context of fast growing African cities.

About the OTF 3D Printing Architecture Program
The Postgraduate in 3D Printing Architecture is a 6-month long intensive programme in the field of additive manufacturing of sustainable architecture. Between the use of advanced technology for construction and the desire to develop a holistic design approach to architecture, we engage with different areas of research that include robotic manufacturing, material research and performance-based design. The programme seeks to develop technological and architectural solutions in collaboration with Industry partners to answer the current needs and challenges of our habitat.

The Postgraduate in 3D Printing Architecture is a programme of applied research. Rather than imagining an architecture for a long-term future, our aim is to apply state of the art technology to today’s construction paradigm. It is axed around the continuity of the development of a body of research long explored in the Institute together with our industry partners.

The course runs as a partially collective programme with a mixed group of researchers of IAAC’s Master second years and other specialised students with interest in 3d printing, in eco-friendly material research or in the field of housing. The course is structured in 3 phases: explorations, a series of exercises to gain knowledge into the topic followed by a design charrette and the construction of a 1:1 prototype that ambitions to be as close a possible to a real building fragment.

About IAAC
The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is a centre for research, education, production and outreach, with the mission of envisioning the future habitat of our society and building it in the present.
IAAC follows the digital revolution at all scales (from bits to geography, from micro-controllers to cities, from materials to the territory) to expand the boundaries of architecture and design and meet the challenges faced by humanity. IAAC is an experimental and experiential centre where one learns by doing, through a test methodology that promotes real solutions.

IAAC is an open, independent and radical non-profit foundation, with 17 years of activity; inspired by the values of Barcelona, the capital of architecture and design, where urbanism was invented and where a local high quality and innovation-oriented research is connected to an international network of excellence in technology, architecture and society fields.
