Yesterday, it was announced that Daniel Libeskind will design a landmark building for the UK that will house the new Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution.  As part of the University of Essex, the UK’s highest ranked university for social science research, this new building seeks to become an “international beacon for democracy” as it will build upon the university’s 40 years of practical and academic expertise in the field of human rights, justice and governance.  Libeskind commented, “I consider it an honor to be involved in a project with such visionary humanitarian objectives. I have always believed that democratic openness and conflict resolution is critical not only in the political sphere but in the making of architectural space.”

More about the project after the break.

Anchoring the university’s new Knowledge Center, the multi-million dollar building will accommodate research and training spaces, as well as seminars and consultancy activities.  A moot court will enable participants to take part in simulated court proceedings.

Professor Todd Landman, Director of the IDCR, said, “The focus of this newly-formed Institute will be unique in combining rigorous social scientific research and policy analysis with practical experience and attention to democracy, human rights and justice.

“We are delighted that has been chosen to design the iconic building we need to expand and develop our embryonic work. The building will evoke a powerful reaction from visitors, while conveying the seriousness and purpose of an international institute,” he added.

KOXN says:

Iconic building made with little effort. Unfortunately, Daniel Libeskind has sold his soul to Showbiz and produced a bunch of repetitive parodies of the Berlin Museum version. England you deserve better!!!

Egotrip says:

If they really wanted to promote it as an “international beacon for democracy” surely an open competition with a public vote to decide the scheme would’ve been the better option! Not just another starchitect money maker.

Philosopher says:

A. Wouldn’t it be more appropriate philosophically not to use Libeskind’s aggressive forms in place for “conflict resolution”;
B. Yes, Mr. Libeskind is too commercialized
C. The ideal figure(not to mention that he’s from UK)would be calm & deep philosopher Chipperfield http://bit.ly/9iHDoV

Jorge says:

What does Libeskind know or care about “conflict resolution”? This clown is so unpopular he can’t even resolve conflicts on his own projects. That’s why he was fired from the Freedom Tower. No one could put up with his ego. As for aesthetics? Considering how much the public despise Libeskind’s work in Toronto, Denver and London, it does not augur well for a piece of meaningful architecture in Essex. Who hired this fool?

dss49 says:

-the picture is of the denver museum not the new institute.
-however, I don’t doubt it will have a striking resemblance on the outside. But the real question is how will the outside be resolved on the interior? The problem with Libeskind’s forms is they always create really funky spaces on the interior (which he can get away with in museums). Fellow starchitect Gehry managed to create a democratic space in his Strata Center (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stata_Center) at MIT so perhaps we should wait for news about the institute before we write Libeskind off.

Re: ” … before we write Libeskind off.”

Libeskind and Libeskind’s staff wrote themselves off a long time ago. They’re just a factory churning out wedges and slashes and jagged forms regardless of the design problem. They might get a lot of unwarranted publicity, but at their core they are a bunch of hacks with misguided notions about design. Which is why no one takes Libeskind seriously anymore.

Morgan says:

Libeskind was fired from the Freedom Tower project in New York because of his arrogant personality and his offensive and obnoxious behavior. How did he suddenly become “Mr. Sensitivity” for this project?

Everything you read about him points to a devious and disingenuous character. After all, Libeskind is the hypocrite who lied to the New York Times to say he designed his own home even though he paid another architectural firm to do it for him. What a total cheat!

Libeskind is a genius. I’m sure he’ll be able to do a napkin sketch in 30 seconds that captures the essence of the solution … even before he sees the site or reads the client’s program.

Samuel says:

There surely is some seriously dry wit and irony that has gone into Libeskind’s selection for this project, I suggest. This could only be better if the project fails due to a breakdown in client-architect relations.

I’m confident in Libeskind’s ability to screw up this project and create a mess in Essex just as he’s done everywhere else.

metathustra says:

though not formally compatible with the notion of “conflict resolution” (a building that looks like a stealth bomber), it’s no fault of the architect. conflict is necessary for the global system of finance and consumption to continue. conflict is manufactured and can not be avoided (or “resolved”) until the global power structure is reconfigured with the priority placed on respecting human life (primarily the environment that sustains us and the acceptance that all humans have a fundamental right to food, shelter, and medical care) rather than profits.

    Dendar says:

Well, given the degree to which Libeskind has sold out, I’ll bet that his only motivation is profit. Certainly his scaleless and antihuman “architecture” doesn’t seem to place people very high on the priority list.

Rob says:

They picked Libeskind? Adolf Hitler probably had more interest in conflict resolution than Daniel Libeskind does. If his violent and disturbing architecture is anything to go by, Libeskind’s only interest is in creating chaos and confusion. What were these guys thinking?

Chemo says:

its a pity we hear comments like this. Art Noveau gave us floral forms, we complained; Modernism gave us orthoganal lines, we raised hell. Now some very talented individuals like Libeskind are freeing us from the boredom of the present forms we see that have no art, no story and all we do is complain?
