The city architect of Antwerp, Christian Rapp, organises an international urban design competition on the future development of Linkeroever (the Left Bank). The Left Bank is an exceptional part of Antwerp. It is an urban district, born from a patchwork of plans that were only partially executed. Today, high-rise housing blocks are situated next to villas and zones for recreation. A major asset of Linkeroever is the open and green character. On the other hand it is a residential area with few mixed use. Recently, Linkeroever has been given renewed attention thanks to projects such as Regatta, IGLO-Europark, masterplan Sint-Anneke, etc. However, a general framework ensuring the connection between these and future projects does not exist.
The aim of the design competition is to gather new ideas and insights that can fuel the societal and cultural debate on the future urban transformation of Linkeroever. In the assignment two research themes have been defined:
- A vision on the future urban transformation must say something on ‘what Linkeroever is today, what it can and what it wants to be’. It will answer questions of morphology, programme, landscape and the river bank.
- Besides this, there is the question of the above-ground connection between the Right and the Left Bank. A connection implies a degree of urbanity and can therefore not be seen separately from a global vision on the future transformation of Linkeroever.
The ideas will be presented and discussed during the Architecture Festival in Flanders (September 2017) in an exhibition, a symposium and a book. Besides the city architect Christian Rapp, bOb Van Reeth, (architect-urban planner), Bernard Colenbrander (professor of architectural history) and Christoph Grafe (director of the Flemish Architecture Institute), act as curators of the design competition. In a later phase, the visions will form the basis for the ‘masterplan Linkeroever’.
