In the past, we’ve told you about the AA Visiting School, a worldwide network organized by the Architectural Association School of Architecture in collaboration with each country they visit. They have conducted events and workshops all over the world including Beijing, Madrid, San Francisco, Santiago, Sao Paulo and Singapore among others.

Some months ago, they continued with their events in Tehran, Iran and , . In recent years Iran has emerged as a cultural and economic hub within the Middle East; with its illustrious history in architecture it offers a fertile ground for research and investigation into a number of topics ranging from manufacturing to urbanism. Tehran, its capital city, has become a major laboratory for contemporary cultural production in terms of architecture and has recently undergone massive changes to its infrastructure and urban boundaries to cater for expansion.

Oman has been careful and cautions in its expansion and approach to development, with recent events in the region it is now set to profit with massive increase in tourism. With the existence of a void in architectural thinking and identity in Oman it will be incredibly interesting to see how its will approach issues relating to architecture and urbanism. You can see some photos of the workshop after the break.

Is this not meant to be about architecture? If we wanted to do some poncy, pretentious art or sculpture course fine, but I dont even see a semblance of a building here. I know I might be sounding rather unsophisticated etc, but this sort of emphasis on artsy-ness really p*sses me off

Firstly, I would like to clarify that what you see in the images, was an outcome of a two week intensive course. Therefore these should not be thought of as final product but as a beginning of a new idea.

I think we would be extremely BIASED if we were to think of architecture as making buildings. And I would truly pity anyone who would limit down the profession of an architect to just designing buildings. PLEASE go back to your school textbooks that discuss the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, etc. who did not limit themselves to building, but also designed objects of daily use.

A MOOD which is created in a space [regardless of the medium: object, light or sound] adds another layer to the ARCHITECTURE therefore it has a FUNCTION.

I’ve to add that if I were you, I would judge like Bob by some snapshots of only few projects! being involved in the process and studies that took place during the workshop will show you the purposes and aims that achieved by each projects individually, and what presented in panels and models will show the studies of each projects with basis in visual, structural and cultural studies that all make architecture.
for more photos and description on one of projects I share an album:
