Pazhou Hotel / Aedas

International firm Aedas designed a new hotel and mixed-use development for Guangzhou, .   The complex, which will be completed in 2012, is centrally located within an  existing exhibition zone.   While the project fronts directly onto one side of the water, the location affords views to the water from both directions.  “The design strives to be unique and iconic to give the project a strong and comfortable identity within its surroundings, aiding in its success among competing neighbors.”

More about the project and more images after the break.

Sliding floor plates break down the bulky mass and allow light to enter the inner exhibition hall. The lower levels include multiple levels of retail spaces, an exhibition hall and eateries, and there is a connection to a subway station on the lower floor.

The lobby, which straddles the other side of the pre-function concourse for the exhibition hall, has stacked support spaces until the fourth floor where these supporting functions have space to open up horizontally.

A grand 60 meter atrium ties all these activities together, which is surrounded by the hotel rooms of the tower.

As seen on designboom.

There’s something very odd about the propoortions.

The ‘podium’ is seriously overscaled, I’m sure the spatial requirements of the brief have led to this solution in terms of overall massing but it would help to see that podium broken down further.

I also note that all the 3d views are all from elevated positions with no real indication of how this building would work at street level.

I saw this project at the WAF awards – really amazing when you understand the context. More amazing is that is is already in construction! I love this design…

i agree with ‘Blah’… people, show some respect to the blog (Archdaily). The building is not the most elegant -to say the least- but there are ways to say it and ways to say it.

Re. the building.. oh lord… those guys at Aedas need some serious editing in their design department..

atleast they are willing to experiment in china. between the crazy buildings they are doing, ORDOS in mongolia and the world expa china is a hotbed of architecture for our collective architecture.

you see: the problem is, that the executives/designers on projects like this are westerners/americans, who wouldn’t stand a chance in the western hemisphere (mostly, they are not even registered architects in any western architects chamber, because they wouldn’t fullfill the requiered demands – means, they never designed or build anything in europe or the us).
that amateurs like this get a chance to design in china (because the decision makers there are the same: non-educated and non-intellectual), does not do any right to local designers and architects (from which are many educated and trained in the best practices in the west). so, this design doesn’t represent china – it only represents some weak western designers, which are only allowed to do helpless designs like this in china and dubai.
