Pazhou Hotel / Aedas
International firm Aedas designed a new hotel and mixed-use development for Guangzhou, China. The complex, which will be completed in 2012, is centrally located within an existing exhibition zone. While the project fronts directly onto one side of the water, the location affords views to the water from both directions. “The design strives to be unique and iconic to give the project a strong and comfortable identity within its surroundings, aiding in its success among competing neighbors.”
More about the project and more images after the break.
Sliding floor plates break down the bulky mass and allow light to enter the inner exhibition hall. The lower levels include multiple levels of retail spaces, an exhibition hall and eateries, and there is a connection to a subway station on the lower floor.
The lobby, which straddles the other side of the pre-function concourse for the exhibition hall, has stacked support spaces until the fourth floor where these supporting functions have space to open up horizontally.
A grand 60 meter atrium ties all these activities together, which is surrounded by the hotel rooms of the tower.
As seen on designboom.

seriously?
like a ship
The ship of Zaha looks more beautiful but still it’s a ship.

ahm, seriouslyy??
a ship to be completed in 2012,hum…
There’s something very odd about the propoortions.
The ‘podium’ is seriously overscaled, I’m sure the spatial requirements of the brief have led to this solution in terms of overall massing but it would help to see that podium broken down further.
I also note that all the 3d views are all from elevated positions with no real indication of how this building would work at street level.
might be pretty impressive if built…
disgusting!!!!!!!!!
为什么会觉得不伦不类,有点土气呢?
may be its my problem, I didn’t like this, sorry.
I saw this project at the WAF awards – really amazing when you understand the context. More amazing is that is is already in construction! I love this design…
Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag!

Too impressiv?:) May be… But it is realy creativity… It is frech architecture, not so soft like ZH and etcetera, but clear ond tranparency style.

i think i’m gonna vomit..
I really like the simplicity of how these two distinct sites engage with each other. big challenge – great job…..
? drunk ?
Keep it up, guys. Those are great comments. That’s why I like Archdaily comment section.
I left a comment explaining all the reasons why I thought this building was not as good as it could be and it appears to have been deleted.
Any explanation ArchDaily ?
Oh .. it’s back …. nevermind.
i agree with ‘Blah’… people, show some respect to the blog (Archdaily). The building is not the most elegant -to say the least- but there are ways to say it and ways to say it.
Re. the building.. oh lord… those guys at Aedas need some serious editing in their design department..
trash architecture
like a cheap SF movie!
atleast they are willing to experiment in china. between the crazy buildings they are doing, ORDOS in mongolia and the world expa china is a hotbed of architecture for our collective architecture.

thank GOD it’s in China.
you see: the problem is, that the executives/designers on projects like this are westerners/americans, who wouldn’t stand a chance in the western hemisphere (mostly, they are not even registered architects in any western architects chamber, because they wouldn’t fullfill the requiered demands – means, they never designed or build anything in europe or the us).
that amateurs like this get a chance to design in china (because the decision makers there are the same: non-educated and non-intellectual), does not do any right to local designers and architects (from which are many educated and trained in the best practices in the west). so, this design doesn’t represent china – it only represents some weak western designers, which are only allowed to do helpless designs like this in china and dubai.
That’s BS your talking there.
well andy u have a weak mentality … ur ability to think is too dull
that’s a joke, isn’t it?!
what client would pay for to office which only provides him with being laughed at?
Aedas, you should stop trying to design, and just be executive architect.

yes, what client would pay aedas, to design a project, which is laughed at worldwide?!
agree with enola: aedas should stop trying to pretend to be designers – it just comes accross too helpless every time they try it again…. they might be efficient in executing others’ architects projects, but it seems to be clear: they need someone from outside to advise them what to do – don’t let them play around all alone…. i only feel bad for China, to get the reputation of being a cheap place, only because of this kind of architects, pretending to be worldly known architects, but don’t even hold a registration as an architect in the west (a.b. right?!)
i really feel sad for china’s reputation because of this kind of rubbish-design (created by westerners!!!)….
ahhhh…. I get it – this is a personal vendetta you have with Aedas. Did they beat you in the competition? Maybe you were fired from their office somewhere? There is something “off” about your comments – wonder how many of these negative comments were from you! Too bad – because when you understand the design better, you would see there was some nice ideas behind it. I was glad to see this in Barcelona.
Oh dear Lars, classic response of assuming that anyone who posts something negative has a personal stake / vendetta? How about this as an explanation: Lars, some people actually feel as designers we have an obligation to making the world a better, not a worse place, that we should be enhancing it, not blighting it? If you seriously think that building is an example of good design, then I am lost for words. I’m not interested in the back story, the concept, ‘understanding the ideas behind it’ better. I’m interested in it as a piece of urbanism, and to my eye, it does not look at all successful.
一对棺材!说是悬棺更合适!
看起来有点像棺材,特别是裙楼
there is an interesting development in china – recently a new generation of practices emerge, producing considerate and beautiful design – think of urbanus, pei zhu, exh….
for a long time, chinese architecture seemed to be helpless, with chinese architects trying to adapt to a social and cultural stuation changing rapidly. the new, great architecture produced by some (and a growing number) of chinese practices might be supported by some great designs in china, done by ,for example, oma, steven holl, mvrdv, big, etc
against this positive development, you find a lot of commercial western practices creating horrible, senseless macau/las vegas-like-architecture all over china. these commercial designs (the one above is a good example) seem to be arrogant and ignorant, serving the ego of themselves more than the context and environment. this is why aedas and others get no respect from architects, who don’t understand, how architecture could be treated in such a cheap way.
u r damn rite.
What’s with the hate guys? Can’t different architecture be respected just for once? Either way, something has to stand out between boxes.
I like it! And I see no reason to compare this building with ORDOS (fuu, beah, doh.. etc) projects. i agree its not brilliant of modern Architecture, but not bad… Realy not bad!
Two words: Property Bubble
Perfect example of a corporate debacle. See no reason why fortune five hundreds should even pretend to ‘design’. They are better of just making boring buildings that pay well :)
i appreciate
What an imagination.
