The Monastery of Sainte-Marie de La Tourette remixed
Interesting video by Rob Carter:
“Stone On Stone” is a stop-motion video animation that uses the architectural language of High Gothic and Modernism to invent a contradictory history of their evolvement. The theme starts and finishes with the vast and unfinished Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine, NYC. It is contrasted with Le Corbusier’s La Tourette monastery in France, competed in 1960. The video uses this anomalous but single-minded architectural vision as the foundation for a new emergence of Gothic religious expression, resulting in a complete and unified fantasy cathedral – akin to the building that the Church of Saint John might have aspired to be.

I had to stop halfway through, i mean cool graphics but whats the point really? slapping gothic facades on la tourette hardly seems to “invent a contradictory history of their evolvement”. i would imagine this would have more to do with the actual meaning and usage of space relative to each movement. re-imagining a facade is one thing but elevating that exercise to such a lofty thesis is in my opinion a bit flimsy.
Well, I like the Pythonesque flair…
One day, when children meet these technical abilities, they will do this kind of games in their kinder-gardens… This is an useless video! Please, learn some architecture and spend your energies and capabilities in something useful…
Indeed, nice done. But I don’t get the point too.
OK, they want to compare the modernistic view of religion with the classic, gothic architecture. But I don’t think this is the way to do that.
Are you guys serious? I think this video is brilliant, but the fact that architecture fans like yourselves would dismiss such a creative endeavor as “useless” leaves me shocked and confused.
only someone who has never been to experience the beauty of la tourette, or was unmoved by the silence there, would choose to make such a useless video.
