The global design practice Populous announced this week that they have been selected by the State Corporation ‘Olympstroy’ to design the main stadium for the 2014 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in , .

Populous has also designed the master plan and overlay plan for competition and non-competition venues and facilities, and now adds designing the main 40,000 seat stadium to their expanding role on the 2014 Games. Populous is joined in the design consortium by Russian contractor Engeocom, and Botta Management.

Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, whilst its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day, and provides an iconic representation of the colour and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night.

Voronoi is a pattern of olympic buildings :)

Hope they’ll realize this in Russia, would love to come to Sochi in 2012.

In general… I want to see more pics, plans and sections.

since David Rutten developed his Voronoi scripts for Rhino/Grasshopper, they pop up all over the place.

looks beautiful although lacks quite a bit of detail. Hopefully the detail won’t ruin it. Also, shouldnt this be a closed stadium since its winter?

NMiller says:

It is hard to provide a full assessment of the design with little more than an overly abstract rendering. At a glance, the design seems cold and uninviting.

Additionally, the fact that voronoi-like patterning is so pervasive and ‘trendy’, the project comes off as an overwrought copy.

Looks Nice and different. My question may be stupid but Can someone just tell me which sports you play inside a stadium during winter olympics ? I don’t get it.

Finally found out: “will provide a seaside setting for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 2014 Winter Olympics.”
“The facility will serve as a training centre and venue for the Russian Football National Team after the Games.”

      What a joke

That’s the first thing I thought as well. It’s taken a pair of highly recognizable and very idiosyncratic buildings and reduced them to a bit of a pastiche or aplique.

Although it’s kind of a good looking building, it’s really sort of sad.

I think we will look back at this in 10 years ans say “thats so 2010″, ´meaning its nice and all but not very original. Personally im looking forwatd to the day when stadiums become an integral part of the cities that surround it. Maybe this can be convertted to a botanical garden in a few years when the games are ower and everyone have forgotten about the building. =)
