EXP Architects and teammates Studiomustard Architecture, Sempervirens Landscape Designers and Even Conseil have won the design for the Ecodistrict “Heudelet 26” in Dijon, .  Located in proximity to the city center, the new urban design will be the first of Dijon’s Ecodistricts and serve as a model for later developments.  The district  will enhance “the neighborhood’s identity and density by favouring mixed income and mixed generational housing, thus testifying to a new way of conceiving urban development.”

More about the Ecodistrict after the break. DHE-3DVIEW1

The project includes approximately 300 houses, (a mix of social housing and privately rented or owned residences), 9 artist workshops, 1200m² of offices, shops, kiosks, cultural facilities, commercial retail and service amenities. These buildings will all be eco-oriented, either utilising passive designs or even actively generating energy.

The district is geared toward pedestrians and cyclists; yet, the district will also include a parking lot that will rest slightly below grade and its roof will “provide a green corridor, with commons, playgrounds, urban forums, vegetable gardens.”

DHE-AERIAL VIEW

The whole project stresses green building and civic participation, yet the Ecodistrict puts emphasizes on the main park that incorporates innovative ideas “with regards to urban, social, technical and energetic requirements.”

More projects like this one are in dire need all over the world, specially developing cities in third world and expanding economies. Great use of public views, space and infrastructure to insert a sort of live-in urban lung. Interesting.

KieranTimberlake: Inquiry

We recently received KieranTimberlake’s newest book, Inquiry. Instead of listing one project after the next, as in most monographs, this book is organized around ten gerunds: bending, coupling, filtering, inserting, offsetting, outlining, overlapping, puncturing, reflecting, and tuning. This is…
