China Pavillion for Shanghai World Expo 2010

Sep 2009
The Chinese Pavillion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 is already in construction. Being the country that hosts the World Expo, the pavillion designed by Chinese architect He Jingtang stands in the central location of the Expo site at 63 meters tall, which triple the height of any other pavillion.
The main structure of the China Pavillion, “The Crown of the East,” has a distinctive roof, made of traditional dougong or brackets, which has a history dating back more than 2,000 years.
Below the main structure, there will be a 45,000-square-meter joint pavilion featuring the displays from local provinces, cities and regions. For more information, click here. More images after the break.

Probably not the prettiest pavilion but at least it reflects the country it comes from unlike all the others.
unlike the danish, sending the national symbole [the little mermaide] and give away 1001 city bikes?
they have some sculpture from Aiweiwei(chinese artist) for exchange during that period, and danish has a lot of bikes i guess.

reminds me of a building from bratislava – built in 70’s , a Slovak Radio building
just when we thought authoritarian brutalism was over
Reminds me of the Geisel Library at UCSD:

re bueno!!!
for some reason, the fourth picture down kinda severs whatever links to the past building still had…i guess huge goofy spotlights will do that….
indeed!!
“triple the height of any other pavillion” what a welcoming gesture by the host nation. I find this objectionable and boring. Look at any other page on this website and see what majestic wonders could have been considered instead.
Tadao’s tokyo pavilion?

That was Tadao Ando’s japanese pavillion for Sevilha world expo 1992
PRETENTIOUS
what a trash.most of my architect friends in china dont like this conservative project. i am a fans of Archdaily beacause i like all the new buildings and all the creative projects. The most important raison is all the projects are seriously selected by you,our dear editors.but this time you make me disappointed.you know this projet is only a bad advertisement of the EXPO.from the architects’s eye, it is a very poor projet.IT HAS SOME POSSIBILITY OF COPY .the architect who design it has no creative vision. so i hope you to get it rid of this website.
a chinise architect.
Dear Sword,
We are going to feature ALL the pavilions for the expo. This gives everyone a chance to do the critique, and evaluate them by knowing all that is being presented at the Expo.
even if we chose not to talk about the style or scale of the project, the quality of the design is not what you would have hoped. Yes, Ando did something similar more than once, but with a construction clarity that this project lacks completely.
Arato isozaki has exactly the same building for Qatar!!!
Arata isozaki.. sorry :)
I went there last year!
Oh wait…. no, I went here…
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:20030727_27_July_2003_Tokyo_International_Exhibition_Center_Big_Sight_Odaiba_Tokyo_Japan.jpg
In terms of structure they have nothing in common…. I think that the intersected beams of this building are quite something…
I went there last month and took a couple of fotos.
The beams which are considered to be intersected are not exactly doing some structure things. They are more just skin things.
But it is really a fantastic structure developed by the ancient. Mostly used in traditional buildings in China.

so 70’s…. vry dated
hate it. I’m wondering why archdaily puts it here…
Dear Chen, please read my response above.
i also think so.
i think this bad design made the level of Archdaily become lower!!

At least u r a Chinese!
From all the links people posted all it takes to be the same is have some sort of an inverted pyramid. It’s all been done before people.
Stargate 2009
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_of_Slovak_radio
also the same than the office building on the artificial island in tokyo
just copy of metabolist, early isozaki….
nothing new
u r SB(it means idiot
hey, watch ur language! archdaily may ban us(chinese) from visiting the website! dont cause us any trouble
I m living next to the expo site rite now and get to see this thing at least twice a day. .. god its huge and stupid…
its main concept should be the traditional Chinese wooden brackets (斗拱) which are supposed to be quite light. here this heavy thing has lost the feeling compeletly…
feel sorry for u…
Shan Zhai?
yeah. Looks like what Arata Isozaki did in the 60s
But Isozaki’s idea was to provide an alternative typology for housing. According to Isozaki, those tree trunks are inhabitable.

While for He JingTang, I guess it was just to mimmick an old element in Chinese Architecture and scale it up for the expo…
http://www.yingchengj.com/jpg/14.jpg
Still, the thing holds the roof. Not really a new design in any way but I guess his idea was to make something BIG with local (and here historical) technology… successful huh?
You can argue the origin. Who did what first, or what looks like what.
Chinese did the dougong 2000 years ago.
But the problem is, why still showing it some 2000 years later?
also the Qatar national library looks exactly the same
http://media.photobucket.com/image/qatar%20national%20library/mheiss01/QatarNationalLibrary1.jpg
some day Chinese people will rule da world! you’ll c! they r comin’
I can not got the meaning of this pavilion, which has poor idea and structure.Maybe they wanted to creat the original building by using the element which from the traditional architecture. But what I can understand is that all the chinese architects are trying to creat their own architectureal skills.
a bold project.
has a lot to say about china’s culture and carries that meaning across.
not the prettiest building around but very conceptual, simple and elegant.
