Maserati’s Garage Competition Winners

By Sebastian J — Filed under: Awarded Competitions , Houses , ,

1250610161-designdriven-winner-image1The luxury car brand Maserati organized a competition to search for the finest architectural garages. The competition was divided into two sections. One for existing garages and other for concept garages.

The existing competition was won by Holger Schubert from Archisis. This garage was designed with two main objectives in mind: to create a pure and restrained minimalist environment that allows one to focus on the car as a piece of art and to create the ultimate experience for the driver to arrive at home.

The concept garage winner was Chris Altman from Stubbs Muldrow Herin Architects. The design approach seeks to redefine the relationship between car, driver and garage. Unlike the typical garage of today, the design redefines the notion of the garage from a space of storage to a place that exhibits the quality and prestige of a Maserati. In concept, the garage is designed to refocus one’s attention on the car.

You can see more info on the winners and other entries in the competition’s official website. More images and a great video after the break.

Where’s the toolcase and the lifts? Looks like a room for him and his car to watch SpeedTV. “Honey, can you get me a Coke and some 5w30 for my car?”

I think the “Existing Garage Winner” is a not real image.
I think is a virtual space with a Photoshop work later.

The Build project looks fantastic. The video is very helpful, I’m glad they put the effort into making it. I can’t believe I missed this competition, as it is right up our alley!

We currently have many motorcycles and our antique sports car in our well organized, but under-designed garaged. Unfortunately, we can’t fit our modern sport car in there! An opportunity to re-envision this space would have been wonderful. My applause to all that participated, from another motorphile!

Shouldn’t the chair be facing the car?

There should also be a mirror behind the car, so the man can see himself, and the car, again.

And perhaps a trough, so when he really starts to ‘enjoy’ the car he has somewhere to ‘go’ as it were.

Excellent space,
but I don’t think u can have this garage defined as a living room because of the fire risk created by car. I would love to see floor plan drawings.
and speech is awful guy has “really natural expression” and he told nothing about architecture, well sliding idea is nice but you’ll have to start/stop engine right in front so wind will blow in fumes anyway, but still I thing he should say more about architecture than mention some sliding :-D

James UK says:

I like this, and while I’m sure there could be many subtle alterations to add depth to the project, I don’t think anything as literal as a toolbox, or as corny as a mirror would be fitting or complimentary to the space, let alone improve it – what do other people think?

Personally, I would have liked to see more of the house that this garage is incorporated into; I was surprised to read that “it is located on the upper floor of a new addition to a 1953 ranch style home!” I don’t know about anyone else, but I would never have imagined that from the pictures.

Finally, to ‘galaxian,’ this isn’t simply a living room with a car in it, really, is it? I don’t think everyone could simply drive their car into their home, park up, and have it look completely in place, could they? The project is very subtle and reserved, but that is what allows the car to become the focal point – it is the details of this design that set it apart from similar minimalist designs submitted.

James UK says:

There have been a few comments criticizing emissions from the car being given off into the house, however, countless homes have a garage adjoined, with no fear of emissions. In fact, this particular ‘garage’ addresses this issue, as explained in the video, with the use of the controllable ramp that removes the need to start the car inside the space.

I also think some people are assuming too much from the photo – just because there is a television and a couple of chairs making this space look inhabitable, we cannot assume it is the primary living area, let alone the heart of the home. Like I said in my previous post, it would be nice to see more of the house that this garage is incorporated into, so that we could better review it’s relationship with rooms like the kitchen and living areas.

From the information we are given – judging this space as a place to park and view the car as a piece of art – there is no issue surrounding the cars emissions.

    James UK says:

There is a lot of comments about the existing garage, but few about the concept… What do people think of it?

Personally, I’m very skeptical about the practicality, success, and even the reasoning behind the concept.

From reading the annotations, I think the designer intended the turntable to reverse the direction of the car for departure, which obviously wouldn’t happen – in my opinion, the turntable would very quickly lose it’s novelty (if it ever had any) and become an inconvenience. More importantly however, I don’t see what this costly and clumsy mechanism really achieves in terms of better presenting the car as a piece of art to be admired; of course it physically brings the car inside, but it’s a very superficial gesture. As someone else has commented, we have no idea what the space the car would sit in is like, and I can’t work out how the sketchup image relates to the project.

I am completely baffled as to how this ‘concept’ managed to win this competition; it has absolutely no substance, explained or implied, and even the supposed inspiration that is written about seems retrospectively added in a hopeless attempt to justify the design.

yes, i have to agree about this concept winner. i was a contestant in the competition and i thought that my project, or some of the more conceptual and better laid out projects would win, but this “conceptual” project due not even correctly work and is poorly produced. i pity the judges for their lack of judgement and taste. the winning project seems very elementery and not very well developed. too bad for maserati, i thought that they wanted a progressive garage that represented their company and car, what a shame.

Kids should live near nature, pets and other kids. But this one will be near CO1.
This reminds me of Michael Jackson and his kids (when they were babies) when he was doing freaky things.
The car should be tool, not a fetish.

    James UK says:

This comment is very opinionated, without much consideration of the context.

I don’t think that designing a garage in which to best appreciate the car is ‘freaky’, and definitely not relevant to any opinions you have about Michael Jackson. Seriously, where did that come from!?

Your comments make me very confused as to why you bother reading architectural reviews like this, if you harbor opinions like “the car should be a tool, not a fetish”, even more so when you think that creating an interesting space within which to contain the car is a ‘fetish’. This is the very crux of what modern day architecture addresses.

And out of interest, what makes you think that this child will be exposed to any more pollutants than any other child? A child is pictured in this space near a parked car, which will not be started until it is outside; it is pictured here to show how this space can be inhabited and enjoyed, it is hardly an indication that this child will be confined to this space.

Ok, I was wrong about Michael Jackson, this kid reminds me of Bruno’s kid :-) A nice accessory to make an ambient while photographing.
And few more questions:
- Trump has a jet, Foster has helicopter, Zaha will buy zeppelin, where should they watch TV with their kids :-))))
- what if the owner gets back drunk and hits the glass?
- if the owner looses his money and buys old and cheap car?
- is the car the “wife” in this “family”?
- Are you “James UK” the owner of the garage? :-)
Because you get things too much personal and answer to everyone.

extremly unuseable. if you consider that this is not a house with garage because people who drive maserati have bigger house than this is, this is probably only the garage for the car. so, when will you have the time to walk from your hose, leave kids and wife, go to garage, sit there and watch TV? and imagine you arrive with muddy car…
and, talking about garage: on pictures, it looks quite good, with nice proportions, colours and lighning, but on the video, you don’t even have enough place to open doors properly, hole place seems badly designed.
by the way, maserati could work more on interiors of cars, i found quattroporte astonishing, but interior of granutismo is disappointing in class of bentleys, mercs etc:)
