The Silo Competition proposal by NL Architects

By Sebastian J — Filed under: News , , , ,

Amsterdam City Council recently held ‘The Silo Competition’ which involved the adaptive and reuse design for two former sewage treatment silos in the city’s Zeeburg district.

For the competition NL Architects proposed silos dedicated to climbing, sports and culture. In their design the existing structures were extended to the maximum height to benefit from the views.

The cultural silo consists of two theaters with dressing rooms and rehearsal spaces, spaces for workshops, exhibition spaces, music studios and a space for hair design. A bridge connects the silos at the height of the original roof level and office spaces will be positioned on top. The top level will be dedicated to a restaurant with 360 views and a roof terrace.

Seen at designboom. More images after the break.

I’ve been thinking of ways to reuse silos for some time now. The idea of a climbing gym is very cool but I think they have managed to make the exterior worse than what they started with.

I think this is a fantastic project. Its extremely well thought out and supported with clear and concise diagrams and nice drawings and renderings. All together a great job.

I love it!!! It’s a perfect way to integrate existing abandoned (or not used anymore) structures of low/medium cultural value into our lives. This rehab project deserves more exposure.

I think it’s missing a giant Helter Skelter. Mr and Mrs Blobby and their similarly shaped off-springs may not attend the classes or book a weekend of lugging their phat-behinds up those oh-so-kool walls but they might just squeeze themselves in for a ride; ch-ching! Erm, I can dig the rest but “hair design”?!

A step to much in cleverness…sometimes you overthink it..that’s what they have done…this a good starting point…now they should they take out all the junk away..there’s to much noise…i prefered the more serene industrial look the thing had…

Looks like a monstrous alien is trying to hutch out from a tube… I wonder why the photographs do not include the third tower? Is it so different (ugly?) that it spoils integrity of the site?

Very reminiscent of a climbing gym in dallas, tx that repurposed a grain silo. I believe it is called Stoneworks. Much better execution though.

Clever and interactive. A great example of the many ways that a building can be used.
