wow – this Jody fellow is getting far too much clout on this site.
if you want to repeatedly slam minimalism/restrained design, you better have an impressive alternative. all i see over at the “infill” website is a garbled pastiche…i’ll take the white box, thanks.
ArchDaily is great for frequent updates which often result in adding one or two interesting visuals to your day’s procrastinations- but the photos/drawings/renderings are rarely interesting for the reasons ArchDaily gives.
Being in the camp of regular readers who think ArchDaily is becoming rubbish, but wanting to add something constructive- ArchDaily doesn’t do criticism well and it never has. That’s fine when it’s page for scrolling through rapidly (and which generates lots of click-throughs to see more illustrations). But when the content is increasingly given over to exceptionally shoddy imitations of either criticism or theory, the site doesn’t just become boring or silly- it’s downright irritating. I’d like to see ArchDaily stick to doing what it does best, and leave questions/issues that take the time and effort required for serious unpacking to outlets with that express editorial focus.
Oh, and the first illustration in this post- if you let your eyes play around, it (inadvertently) holds completely true in a way that forces the viewer to recognize the logic of perspectival illusion. Jody Brown and ArchDaily should try seeing things differently.
I’m astonished at how many people are upset by these silly posts. They’re not serious theory, so you can stop critiquing them as if they were. And if you’re offended by them because you’re a minimalist, you’re taking yourself way too seriously.
Jody’s sequence of formulas (definitions) of minimalism reminds of the “ikebana” joke:
A student asks his Zen master to explain what exactly is ikebana (the japanese art of arranging flowers). The master points at a vase with flowers in it and says: “Ikebana”. Then takes away one flower and points at the rest: “Ikebana”. After that continues removing flowers one by one and every time says: “Ikebana”. Finally points at the empty vase and says: “Ikebana”.
My favorite bumper sticker:
Minimalism: it’s the least you can do.

I don’t think this was to be taken too seriously…it is actually kind of funny and playful.
how cliche can be funny for educated person?
Jody has a great sense of humor. Just relax everyone. From a minimalist architect.

The ten representations of minimalist archicture reminds me of the Ten ox herding pictures of Zen.
