The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) and the A10 new European architecture magazine are launching the Bakema Fellowship 2011/2012. This fellowship is a grant of €10,000 for research, through design, at the cutting-edge of architecture, technology and society. The deadline for applications is 16 October 2011. Applications should somehow coincide with the NAI’s ‘Architecture of Consequence’ innovation agenda. The grant is intended for pioneering research which can open up novel perspectives on design, use and perception of the built environment. The entries will be assessed on the basis of the study’s anticipated significance for the development and understanding of contemporary architecture and the built environment.
An application must consist of a text of 1,400 words at most, accompanied by illustrative materials. The study parameters should be of such a scope that the findings can reasonably be presented within one year. It could also be a study that is already under way.
Applications for the Sixth Bakema Fellowship must be received by the Jaap Bakema Foundation by 23:59 on 16 October 2011 at the latest, using the application form on the website. The Jaap Bakema Foundation will be announcing the selected 2011/2012 fellow in mid-December 2011.
Research proposals for the fellowship will be assessed by the Jaap Bakema Foundation’s Board, which is comprised of:

Jacob Berend Bakema (1914-1981) was one of the most important post-war Dutch architects. He played a major role as a designer, theoretician, teacher and populariser of his field. Bakema was the fount of inspiration for this fellowship because of his wide-ranging interest in architecture (from chair to city), his belief in the social significance of architecture and urban planning, and his international orientation.
