The Supporters Newsletter - Issue #1

Hi there! Welcome to the first Supporters Newsletter, created exclusively for you. To kick off this first edition, we are dedicating this issue to the concept of START. We will delve into insights on how to get started with Artificial Intelligence, and how it influences the shift in architectural creativity. In addition, we are offering our Supporters a free course on Evolutionary Computational Design, information on a job opportunity at OMA, and a new room visualization tool.

“With utopia, I’m talking about vision. Do not get stuck with sheer necessity. We have to think big, be a little bit visionary. If you do so, you push people to think further. We know we have to be modest, but when you think big you can go one step further than reality. This is utopia: to do things you didn’t imagine were possible.”

Editor Spotlight: Valeria Montjoy and her thoughts on the future of AI in architecture

Valeria, an Architect with a Master's in Urban Design and ArchDaily Senior Content Editor, discusses how to start integrating AI into your workflow.

"I would say AI and the shift in 'architectural creativity' is a very interesting topic for me right now (although I think it's the industry's natural evolution more than a 'trend').

In the past, AI was seen as a disruptive limitless technology capable of replacing creative careers, but recently with the rise of generative AI models and other AI-fueled tools, we have learned that AI 'informs' our creativity instead of replacing it. To keep up with the undeniable future of the industry, architects must embrace AI and adapt their creativity to a new paradigm.

We have to learn how to instruct it, what questions to ask it, the data and prompts to feed it with, and how to use it to our advantage: whether it's to reduce time and costs, generate design iterations, enhance sustainability, optimize building operations, monitor structures, automate tasks or even predict the behavior of new potential building materials."

Topic: Evolutionary Computational Design 2.0
Date: August 19 & 20, 2023
Duration: 8 hours (4 hours/day) - Online on Zoom
Time: 11:00 - 15:00 GMT
Tutor: Ghazal Javidannia

Details: Evolutionary Computation (EC) is a sub-field of artificial intelligence (AI) which uses the "Evolutionary Algorithm" (EAs) to solve problems that have too many variables for traditional algorithms. This method selects the best alternatives between various solutions based on problems' criteria and constraints, known as "Optimization".
