Post-Pandemic Heritage

The book POST-PANDEMIC HERITAGE presents the experience of the joint project between LINA Platform and the UNESCO Chair on Cultural Landscapes and Heritage of the University of the Basque Country. Its main goal was to record and reflect on the social, physical and economic impact that the coronavirus pandemic has had on cultural heritage. The book was coordinated by Carolina Quiroga, Veronica Benedet, Juan Manuel Alonso and Eliana Zamalloa.

POST-PANDEMIC HERITAGE called at the beginning of the confinement to generate a RECORD of photographs and a brief text of reflection, based on the question: How to re-signify the cultural heritage post-COVID 19?
The book brings together these contributions from America, Asia, Europe and Oceania, which were posted on social networks and followed by thousands of people. People confined, but at the same time connected, sharing their stories was a truly innovative experience.

POST-PANDEMIC HERITAGE invited heritage specialists from Argentina and Spain to carry out THOUGHTS on the challenges and scope of this new reality. The publication compiles these contributions, which were organised into the thematic axes: UNESCO Heritage, Challenges, Rehabilitate, Manage, Legislate, Landscape, Cultural Tourism, Sustainability and Inclusion.

The project transcended the initial idea of a register to become, over the months, an unprecedented collective action on a planetary scale in order to revalue our built environment and a new form of heritage activism to denounce and question abandonment. And especially, an evidence that in the most unfavorable conditions of our lives, it is heritage that provides shelter and a sense of belonging.

We thank all the people, organisations and institutions that helped make this publication possible. Far from providing a finished panorama, this book aims to be an invitation to each person or work team to continue generating new interpretations, initiatives and research that allow us to think about how heritage can go through the pandemic context and emerge strengthened and re-signified.
