A special screening of The Spirit in Architecture: John Lautner

Presented by the Society of Architectural Historians/Southern California Chapter The film journeys into Lautner’s world with footage from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin, extensive documentation of his extraordinary buildings, interviews with historians, critics, collaborators, and clients, and engaging footage of Lautner himself. Following the screening, SCI-Arc hosts a panel discussion with award-winning filmmaker Bette Jane Cohen; architect and film co-writer Tom Marble; co-producer Evelyn Wendell; author, historian, and architect Alan Hess; and Lautner scholar Jon Yoder.

The Amman Lab Workshop is an intensive three week exploration of emergent issues concerning contemporary public space in the Middle East. With the city of Amman serving as an active testing ground, students and faculty from universities throughout the region collaborate to expand their understanding of design issues through research, experimentation, discussion and feedback.

The 2010 session of the workshop focuses on Comfort. As a precondition of public space, Comfort is necessary to provide an environment in which assembly and exchange may occur. With physical, virtual, sensorial and emotional attributes, Comfort can be expressed through different mediums and at varying scales. It is delicate, elusive, and necessary.

The workshop ends with an exhibition of the students’ final work at the Nabad Art Gallery and we want to invite you visit it and check what the students are developing these days.

ADFF’s programming will offer a diverse selection of films including feature-length, documentary and shorts that explore how architects and designers think, work and create. The films profile visionary architects and designers, explore urban, social and environmental issues as well as the creative design process and product development.

ASAE is an annual two-day seminar at the School of Architecture, Lund University. It celebrates the beginning of the academic year. The aim is to keep an annual ongoing discussion about international education programs and architectural education strategies. ASAE promotes encounters between different schools of architecture in Europe, America and other countries, taking into consideration the objectives of the School of Architecture in Lund: Architectural Design, Experiment and Construction.

New Buildings New York, a program of the Center for Architecture Foundation, is a series of tours that provide a behind-the-scenes look at new building in the New York metropolitan area and are led by their architects, engineers and designers. All proceeds benefit youth and family programs at the Center for Architecture.

The work of Los Angeles-based artist Megan Geckler lies somewhere between art and design, with architectural installations that are assembled from thousands of strands of multicolored flagging tape, a plastic ribbon typically utilized by surveyors to demarcate space on construction sites.

The innovative Urban Workshop series will explore the varied challenges facing some of the most dynamic global cities. The initial Workshop will convene in Delhi from January 3 to 21, 2011. The Workshop will explore current urban conditions and issues facing this ancient and legendary city that later evolved into Mughal and imperial capitals, and since Indian independence has become the vibrant center of an increasingly influential nation.

Just as many other parts of Istanbul, Sishane-Galata needs to redefine itself in a context that keeps on expanding. Well known for its bazaar-like atmosphere and tight social networks, Sishane-Galata is a not-so-global neighbourhood in a city that seems to constantly grow and stretch itself. Just as Istanbul is being celebrated as a global city at the centre of a vast sphere of economic and cultural influence, the same global, regional and metropolitan powers are forcing so many localities to redefine their functions and identities.

The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservations (GSAPP) at Columbia University have announced its Summer Lecture Series 2010. Here are July events:

Presidio Habitats is a site-based art exhibition celebrating the wild Presidio. It began with an invitation to an international group of artists, architects, and designers to submit a proposal for a temporary habitat sculpture serving a Presidio “animal client.”

The symposium marks the release of the 11 Architects + 12 Conversations issue of PRAXIS: a journal of writing and building. The moderated discussion will invite audience participation in an open dialogue that explores shared and contested territory among this emerging generation of practices.

CURATE THIS! 2010 is the second installment of the CURATE THIS! exhibition series created by BECA: Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art. The annual global art + design event and arts + cultural exchange will take place from July 1 – December 31.

The theme of this year’s Split Talks is the relationship of Tourism, Croatia’s primary economic driver, and its relation to local planning legislation as well as notions of sustainability internationally. The current slow-down in development caused by the world economic crisis as well as the impending entry of Croatia to the European Union raise important new questions, problems, and opportunities for design professionals. These issues will be explored through a series of case studies provided by guest lecturers and university faculty and through a series of round tables.

Lundgren Monuments in association with Vital 5 Productions is proud to present The Architect and the Urn – a west coast exploration of the cremation urn as architectural object, June 3 – July 18, 2010. Twenty-five architects from Seattle to Los Angeles approach the design and concept of housing human ash in this complex and conceptually rich exhibition.

Americans have an unhealthy relationship with death and remembrance. Death care has become a multi-billion dollar industry almost devoid of artists, designers and architects. Instead it is clogged with mass produced plastic urns and heavy, uninspired blocks of imported granite. With the choice of cremation on the rise, more and more of our departed friends and family are returning to us in the form of ash. In the design savvy culture that we live in, it is amazing how few interesting choices exist for us to address this transformed matter. The Architect and the Urn exhibition is assembled to approach this social trend and help fortify the ideas and forms that define our very last residence.

The RE.FLECKS exhibition presents panels J. MAYER H. has derived from data-protection patterns. Developed by chance in print shops around 1900, the patterns were used as an envelope lining to protect the confidential content inside.
