THE URBAN RHETORIC_ISSUE 6_SEPTEMBER 2022_EFFECTIVE URBANISM

RIAS Consultancy – the competitions and procurement arm of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland – has launched a design competition to find an architecture team for a major new cultural building with a focus on mental health and well-being. The ambitious £15 million project, organised on behalf of The Crichton Trust, will be one of the most significant cultural buildings in Scotland, transforming cultural provision in Dumfries and Galloway, while complementing the extraordinary range of facilities and organisations at The Crichton.

Architects are involved in a lot of things like activism, conferences, writing, academics, but at the core of our profession, we make buildings and create spaces. Eduwik Architecture Excellence Awards acknowledges this fundamental core of the profession and celebrates the excellent work produced every year in the field of built environment taking one step closer to the future.

How can rooftop spaces offer more than just artificial land driven by capitalism?

The challenge for the participants of this competition and the primary task and goal is to produce with their creative ideas a high quality concept design, which will communicate genius loci, sense of integrity, historical stratification, and awareness of the needs of the city’s modern functioning and living. This concept design should incorporate facades and a space that is "between", which connects, separates, directs, welcomes, and as such, completes a coherent, harmonious image of the entire urban structure of this extremely valuable part of the city.

Since the beginning of time Humans have been fascinated with gravity-defying megastructures that have dominated the skies leaving a mark for civilizations to come. From the Burj Khalifa to the Empire State building, skyscrapers have been rightly viewed as a strategy to engineer more sustainable cities by emphasizing compact urban spaces.

The design competition is aimed to strengthen the connection of the historic center to the surrounding - which is here specifically represented by the Ombrone river - by means of an urban greenway to be conceived into/along/through via de Barberi. This greenway

The Architectural Photography Awards is celebrating its 10th anniversary. They invite participation from both professional photographers and keen amateurs over 6 categories. The AIA Flint 2022 Design Competition focuses on the existing City of Flint Municipal Center Campus located in the heart of Downtown Flint on Saginaw Street between Fifth Street and the I-69 & I-475 interchange. The 23-acre campus is split between seven government office buildings on the North side of Stevens Street, with a gas station, pawn shop, and vacant office building on the South side of the street.

Graphisoft will host its annual global event online, September 14-16. Building Together 2021 will offer insights into the most challenging and critical issues facing architects and engineers today. Through a carefully curated online program, the conference will highlight critical themes in the AEC industry, with more than 30 leading architects and experts from around the world participating.

The conference will delve into such topics — among others — as the growing focus on sustainability and climate resistance and architecture's role in fostering equity and social justice. On Day 1 of the conference, there will be a special focus on educating the architects of the future. The roundtable debate will be followed by the presentation of the results of Graphisoft's global recruitment survey entitled Hiring the Next Generation of Architects. The results will reveal what companies look for when hiring new talent, as well as what students, fresh graduates, and new hires should focus on when applying for jobs in their chosen field.
